[SOLVED] All Games Stutter, Looking for solutions

Hi All,

I've put up with game stuttering for sometime now, two years at least. In this time i found that my previous i7-4770K was bottle necking my GPU (Asus Strix 1080ti) and in July this year i upgraded to the new Ryzen 3900x complete with new mobo (Asus Crosshair VIII x570) and RAM (G.Skill Traident Z 3600, CL 16). This would not be the end to game stuttering as i thought and it still persists to this day. I have allowed time for drivers and BIOS to mature and it still persists. I have attempted several fixes found across the internet to no avail including tweaks to BIOS, Windows, Nvidia CP, and Overlays

The stuttering occurs in all games, is fairly regular at about 2-3mins, happens with any combination of graphics settings and at any FPS. Occurs on all API's. I use a 144Hz G-SYNC monitor and been unable to resolve using Nvidia CP setting changes. Occurs with all/some Hardware overclocked or not. Occurs even with all other programs closed. GPU usage drops can be seen at time of stutter.

Would anyone agree that at this point i should be focusing on this as a hardware issue? I've been trying to fix mostly on the assumption this is a software issue.
Would appreciate any help and anything really that points me in the right direction of how to deal with this.

Update: Solution tried:
  • Windows Reinstall
  • Stock Hardware Settings
  • Overclocked CPU and GPU
  • Underclocked RAM
  • Lastest BIOS
  • CMOS Clear
  • PC powered directly from wall socket.
  • 1usmus's power plan for Ryzen
  • Closing all running and background programs
  • Disabling HW ACC and Background apps in Chrome.
  • Use of the EmptyRAMCache scheduled task
  • Using G-SYNC monitor
  • Using various variations of Nvidia CP settings
  • Using frame rate caps
  • Updating all drivers both manually and using a driver updating program
  • Disabled Gamer Bar and DVR (Xbox)
To come:
  • Visiting friend next week (Has i5 and 1080ti setup) to run the system on his peripherals and use his hardware to test swapping GPU, PSU etc.

GPU temps are okay.

The SuperNOVA P2 was/is a beast of PSU, and is well regarded. It's quality. It's unlikely it's the issue, but still possible. That leaves GPU.

Like i said, and given you have swapped out nearly everything, bar the GPU/PSU, it's worth doing to see if it's either, as they are both common to both builds. Can you swap either out with spare hardware? Otherwise bring to a repair store and get them to do it for about $20, you'll get the answer then, I suspect.

edit: Given it's a new Ryzen build, it's worth doing a Bios update, and a CMOS clear afterwards, just to be sure.
I guess, it could be a couple of things. Given you've already swapped out to a new system, it kinda points to your GPU. Is it overheating? Could be worth replacing the thermal paste on the GPU, the Strix is prob a few years old now, so that might help. Have you checked all the fans on the GPU are spinning okay.

What PSU do you have. Is it the same PSU from your older build? GTX1080ti's can be power hungry, some consume up to 300w at boost.

How much ram do you have, and in what config? 2 x 8, 1x 16 etc

Start troubleshooting by leaving your system at stock. No OC's at all. None on CPU/GPU and leave ram running at XMP (that's fine). Take out those variables that can confuse results.

Thanks for your input Keith.

GPU maxing out at 69 Degrees Celsius and Fans are working as intended. Clocks as expected.

PSU is the EVGA SuperNOVA 750w P2 which previously i have been told is adequate for my needs and was not changed.

RAM is 16GB (8x2) using the primary slots on the MB (A_1 and A_2) and Infinity Clock is correctly set at 1800Mhz and runs on XMP (3600Mhz. CL16).

I have left PC at stock settings other than XMP profile (Have tried bringing RAM Clock down to 3200 before) including after a recent Windows Reinstall, issue still persists.

I have spoken to a friend who happens to own a 1080ti as well so going round to his next week to swap gpu's and even PSU's if required and see what happens. Ill report back then.

Still looking for any help software or hardware related that i can try before then.

If running Google Chrome as your browser have you gone into settings and turned off use hardware acceleration and there cough cough run in the background services. Seems off base to think about your browser and games stuttering but just watch MSI Afterburner NOT Gaming and watch your GPU Max out. Also look at your Task Manager and see what a Hog Google Chrome puts on your system. Firefox has there taxing as well. Give it a try might surprise you. Fixed my stutter issue. Happy Gaming

Thanks for your input, was a good suggestion, unforunately didn't resolve the stuttering.

Did you do the bios update/CMOS clear?

BIOS updated to latest last week with the AGESA 1.0.0.4 included. CMOS clear today with no effect unfortunately.

Also tried plugging PC power cord straight into the wall rather than the power extension after reading about that earlier, no change either. I have noticed that GPU usage drops by about 4-25% on each stutter and so does GPU power draw but only by about 2-6%

Update: While still researching the issue to this day i discovered the Nvidia Control Panel Debug Mode which sets GPU clock speeds back to the original Nvidia 1080ti Clock speed (1480MHz) rather than any of Asus's boosted figures (1683 MHz). This has completely resolved the stuttering for me.

Given this, can we determine a bad GPU or PSU or could it still be both?

The only way to tell would be to swap the PSU for another one to test it. I would really lean towards the gpu being flawed by ASUS if setting it back to OEM stock speeds fixed the issue.
