I have an HP 5300C scanner and a Canon Digital Rebel camera that _used_ to
work fine in XP. I haven't used either in awhile (a month at least) and now
when I go to hook either one of them up, they don't work.

If I open Device Manager, both show up in the "Unknown" group (with the grey
diamond icons) instead of the Imaging section (I forget what it's called
exactly, and it's not there anymore). I've tried uninstalling, unplugging,
re-installing drivers, and then plugging back in... they install silently
without any errors, but continue to show up in the "Unknown" group and are
inaccessable (in the case of the scanner, the software does not see the
scanner.. in the case of the camera, it doesn't show up under My Computer
like it used to, and the camera is set to PTP.. even when I run it in
'Normal' mode, it still shows up under 'Unknown' except with a different
name and still doesn't work).

The Windows Image Acquisition service is running. Nothing interesting is
being logged.. but something is totally broken.

Anyone else see this or know how to fix it? I've been Googling for hours to
no avail, and I'm extremely irritated at this point.

The other odditiy (and perhaps related) is that if I go to Control
Panels->Scanners & Cameras->Add a Device, absolutely nothing happens.
Nothing runs, no dialogs, no errors, no nothing.

Arrrrrghhhghhh... I even turned USB off in the BIOS and rebooted, hoping
Windows would clear out all of the device information it has in the
registry -- but of course Windows doesn't EVER clean up after it's self.
USB is back on and it's still jacked up.

Short of re-installing, how can I get this back to a clean state?

It sounds as though spyware or trojans have denied you the use of your
imaging devices. Are you able to install and run programs such as
SpywareBlaster, AVG & Anti-virus, HiJackThis, Ad-Aware, SpyBot S&D? Whose
firewall are you using, and is it up-to-date? Let me know, please.

Regards,

Philip Andrews

Hmm, doesn't appear so. Ad-Aware doesn't come up with much (couple of
cookies), I run SpywareBlaster.. I don't have any anti-virus at the moment
(I let my Symantec expire because their software is just getting too
invasive, and I was running AVG but it was causing some games to crash.. so
I'm still looking for something else, but I'm very careful and haven't done
much between then and now and doubt I have a virus). Spybot S&D reports
nothing.. Hijack This reports nothing unusual that I can see.

Firewall is a Linux box.
