Im in a house with 5 other people. Pretty sure Im the only one who will be hardwired into it and the only one with a gaming/download habit. We have a 100 mbps internet service. So whats a decent all in one modem to get?

Your ISP didn't give you one? If they did that should be fine. If they didn't I wouldn't suggest an all in one, I would get a decent DOCSIS 3 modem maybe an Arris surfboard SB6183 and a good router at least wireless N but personally if I was buying a router in 2016 going on 2017 it would be wireless AC, however those can be pricey.

They do provide one, with a $10 rental fee. So just makes more sense to buy.

Are there many benefits with getting a modem and a router as opposed to a 2 in 1? The ARRIS SURFboard SBG6580 just seemed appealing to its $30 refurb price tag. Though I dont think it has the 5ghz capability for wireless.

If you just want to plug it in and have it work an all in one should be fine. But if you like to manage and control your network most all in ones are out of the question, a lot have very little GUI management features I have even encountered one that wouldn't let you forward ports, wouldn't let you filter mac addresses, really wouldn't let you do anything but change the password and what channel it was using. This article I linked below goes into more detail.

That arris looks okay, I'm not sure how that compares to other all in ones but I personally have never encountered one I like. Though like I said if you just want to plug it in and never touch it again, I doubt you will care about the shortcomings of a lot of all in ones.

Yeah really Im probably the most tech savvy in the house but I just like to plug and go, I cant think of anything id really do to the network outside of changing the channel or resetting remotely. My main concern is keeping latency low, but since Im the only one hardwired to the modem that shouldnt really be a problem right? Ive been using all in ones for a while, and only had a seperate set up while I lived at home, but I remember there being serious problems with that set up.
