Hello all, I just upgraded my PC from win 7 to win 10. Searched the internet for an answer but can't seem to find my specific problem anywhere.
When I plug in a usb thumb drive I immediately get all the drive letters from E: to P: pop up and ask me to format the drive. and all 12 or so appear on my device list. Doesn't do this on two other laptops that I tried the thumb drive on. After I click on all the drives and say no too formatting, the one small file that is on the drive shows up on drive P:. And I am able to transfer it to the recently upgraded win 10 PC. I am at a loss what to do. All drives and updates are current. Thanks for any help. Dave

Seems like that USB drive is sensitive to windows 10, or perhaps there is something wrong with it. If you lost 10 Gigs that might mean there is something wrong with the drive. FAT in general gets corrupted much easier than NTFS and doesnt have so many fail safes. When you reformat, try to do a full format, not a quick one. NTFS should block out damaged sectors on...
Run checkdisk on the memory stick. It is likely just not recognizing the file system of the memory stick and wants to format it.

Another option is reformat the memory stick after backing up the files on another computer. Reformat it to NTFS, it should make this problem go away hopefully. Also, maybe try another usb slot on the computer and see what happens.

Hello, I did the check disk and it said no need to check, there are no errors detected. But I did it anyway. Said there were no errors. Did the NTFS reformat and noticed I lost almost 10gig of the drives capacity, did it anyway to se if it cured the problem. It did not. Just for fun I tried the drive on another laptop and that also had almost 10gig lost too. So I reformatted the drive back to FAT(default). I also tried all three of my usb slots. same thing happens on all of them. Thanks

Well, I am doing more troubleshooting and I decided to try two other thumb drives on my pc, low and behold they work fine. Not sure why I didn't try this earlier? But like I said in the original post, this suspect thumb drive works perfectly fine on other laptops. I'm guessing this thumb drive and upgraded win 10 pc just don't get along. Oh well, thanks for your help.

NTFS should block out damaged sectors on the drive, I cant remember if FAT also does. In any case a full format is necessary I think.
