I have a desktop (about 5 months old). This morning I did a big booboo. And I really need some guidance.
So this morning, my online stock trading platform was not launching when I went to double click it. Actually it has been a few days, I've deleted and reinstalled a few times, to no success. This is not the problem. But the following is: from the best of my recollection as I performed these following steps mindlessly:
1) I right click some icon on my desktop - might have been Google Chrome.
2) When u right click, one of the options is to select "open with..".. I selected this and it was to "open with JAVA". As of 3/16/15, the lastest Java is 8, update 40.
3. After completing step 2.. (I know it was a dumb thing I did).. all the icons on my destop changed.. the IE 11, my Microsoft Office, my printer Icon, .. these images on all these icons changed to the picture (images) of the JAVA program.. the image of "cup w/ steam rising from it"..
4) Worried, I immediately tried to open Google Chrome, and upon double clicking it.. a black either a DOS or Java dialog/program box launched for a split second.. not even 2 seconds and immediately disappeared. And that is it.. the google chrome did not launch and take me into the internet. This black "java" launch also occured if I double click on any of the other icons on my desktop.. my turbo tax, Microsoft word,.. essentially my computer has been hijacked (by my own doing) by the JAVA program.
5) Essentially every program when I double click it is trying to launch via JAVA.
My question, I want to "unlink" JAVA to these programs.. I just want to undo the huge mistake I did when in step 1) when I selected "open w/ JAVA" out of frustration.
Note: I went to add remove program and uninstall and then reinstalled JAVA after this huge mistake, but even when JAVA was uninstalled, double clicking any of the programs still tried to launch via JAVA.
Basically my desktop is useless now.
I am writing this problem on a laptop.
ty for any guidance and if able, pl be specific as I am not a computer expert.
