I didn't offer a "solution", I merely suggested you try file recovery software.
As for the Windows version, well as long as the specific file recovery app runs on that Windows version you can use it.
For "Recuva" The developer says:
"
Recuva has support for every modern version of Windows"
And for testing the hard drive with a bootable CD or pen drive (the only way to properly test the Windows boot drive), the OS version is irrelevant.
