Am I allowed to have mismatching dual channel kits?

I'm looking to add another 2x4GB dual channel memory kit to my build. I currently have the Patriot Viper 3 2x4GB 1600MHz kit. I was wondering if there are anything I have to take into consideration before purchasing another pair of DIMM modules, such as same memory speeds, timings, etc.

Volts, timings, speed all of it needs to match to have a good chance of not having problems.

Put simply, it's a crapshoot, one set might play nice or it might not, no guarantes, even w/ the same exact model of sticks. If you try and any problems, give me a shout, can often get them to play with slight voltage or timing adjustments
