Am I using too much power?

Hi, I currently have a 750w power supply and recently fitted a new GPU which needed a 750w supply. Today, I added in a 2nd Optical drive (Blu-Ray) and then went to reboot the system, upon login, I got a BSOD that disappeared before I could read anything. It then entered into a never ending loop of restarting itself whilst loading windows.

I reopened the case and disconnected my original drive (not Blu-Ray), and rebooted. It works fine, no lag, no glitches and no BSOD.

Could I have overloaded the PSU by adding in the 2nd drive? Or could it have been something else at fault?

Thanks, from Lewis

A Radeon R9-290X - needs at least 33A on the 12v rail and a 600w power supply minimum.

Your PSU has 3 - 12 volt rails at 18 amps each , so you shouldn't be lacking power , but I doubt these units produce advertised ratings.

Most Novatech's are rebadged OCZ Units and aren't very good.Basically poor power supplies.
By needing a 750 Watt power supply, they are just recommending that you have that, i doubt anything bad will happen, although it could be the issue to your BSOD, the graphics card requires certain amount of connectors and such that most likely come with 750 watt powersupplies, but as well as i am aware, i have never found a graphics card that has used "750" watts of power, i believe its just a recommendation. Your BSOD if it is occurring could be a Driver issue for you graphics card or any other driver issue on your computer, i have had it many times before i updated my graphics card driver. I'M NOT AN EXPERT, PROFESSIONAL or anything just some advice BSOD is not end of world, its actually a good sign, think of it was a warning saving from something bad to happen.

Thanks for replying, however I'm not asking if the graphics card is drawing too much power, I'm asking about the second Blu-Ray Optical Drive was the problem

You may have overloaded the PSU, BUT please post the brand, model and specifications of the power supply; what CPU you are using, number of hard drives, and model of video card.
The biggest power draw in a PC is generally the video card, not an optical drive, but it sounds like the psu can't produce enough current..

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I've got bigger problems with my PC now in comparison to worry about the PSU at the moment, but from the info you've given me, I'll stay clear of Novatech branded components if it's just OCZ.

Thanks again!
