I built a PC for a friend. As I got my FX 6300 rig up and running, got him to buy a similar system, but he's complaining about the noise the stock cooler makes while gaming. His old system had a Core 2 Duo 7300 CPU with an aftermarket tower heatsink. It's not branded, some chinese stuff, but done its job, never went above 40 degrees C on socket temps on load - of course, the difference between the two CPUs is huge, I know. Well, as the old heatsink and fan came with the mounting brackets for all socket types, I wanted to try it on the FX 6300, but on the old heatsink's label it says that it can only cool a 85W processor, compatible with AM2 sockets. The mounting types on AMDs are the same, so it fit when I tried it without turning the PC on, but that 10W margin keeps me from going further even though my friend insists on doing so. There are also a few millimeters on each side of the FX that the heatsink doesn't cover, so, I'm asking, if it'll keep the system cool, will those 10W matter in the long run. How about those few uncovered millimeters?

Yeah, you're right, I was just curious, don't mean to take responsability for something like that, even though I'm pushed to do it. My friend's wife doesn't want him spendin' money on things she doesn't understand, so I guess they'll have to deal with the noise 'till he'll go rogue and buy a better fan. Thanks!
