AM3 Graphics card in an AM3+ socket

I'm currently in the process of looking at some hardware.

I'm interested in getting the AMD Phenom II X4 (http://goo.gl/lXJ9A) and the GIGABYTE GA-880GM (http://goo.gl/nypBQ)

However, on the Phenom page it says "Compatible with motherboards with an AM2+ or AM3 socket", and the GIGABYTE GA-880GM has a AM3+ socket type.

Are they compatible?
Any other suggestions or recommendations are appreciated as well.

First of all the II x4 might seem as a good idea, because it's a quad-core with high clockpeeds.

But try to look at the Far Cry 3 benchmarks

You might want to find another alternative if your budget allows it.

I don't really have an actual budget planned out.
I'm not going to get everything at once. I'm just slowly choosing things and trying to keep the cost down at the same time.

Ideally I'd just like to play modern games on high settings. I'm probably going to start looking at graphics cards soon. Any suggestions on that?

If you don't know how much to spend then I can't really pick out the best choice for your Money.

Great value GPUs right now is

GTX 660, Radeon 7850 and Radeon 7870. Mind that Nvidia (GTX 660) offers adaptive vsync, PhysX, FXAA and TXAA.

Great value CPUs

AMD FX 6300 and AMD FX 4300 - Best option would be either i5-3570 or i5-3570k, though they come at a greater Price.
