i bought a AMD am4 cpu cooler off ebay i asked the seller will this fit my AMD am3 cpu slots he said it should do and it dose not fit is there some sort off universal mounting kit out there for this. my mother board is a ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0

Solution
OK. Yeah, that cooler is the stock AMD AM4 cooler. Only fits AM4 motherboards (not using the retention bracket)
As to a suggestion for a replacement cooler, do you want to use the retention bracket or do you want one that screws directly thru the motherboard into a backplate? Price?
The AMD retention bracket is backward compatible with earlier versions, but the mounting holes that the retention bracket screws to is not. So if you are using a cooler that requires removing the retention bracket, it will not fit; as you found out.

Which cooler is it?

thanks for getting back to me. the cpu i have on now is a 5 pound cheep one and is over heating a lot and causing my pc to shut down do you have any links where i can get a good cooler. i did have a liquid cpu cooler but it was a bit noisy and it started to leak i'm looking for quiet cpu cooler and wont over heat as much. thanks

the USA hello there buddy how you doin. i'm in the UK lancashire area as you can see with the Ebay link i send lol. yes i've been looking at them not so keen on the look of it looks like a dogs back leg lol i'm looking for something more up to date. thanks for the link tho.

Here's an assortment of coolers that will fit your board (as well as others) from the UK Newegg site. What do you like appearance-wise and cost-wise?
What CPU will it have to cool? Do you OC the CPU?

EDIT: You may have to change to their UK site on your own. Every time I post the UK link, it reverts to the US site for me. Probably using their cookie on my PC to select the US site.
