Amateur HD Video Editing - First Time Builder

Hello,

What setup would you recommend for amature HD video editing and moderate gaming (COD4, Red Alert 3, BF2 (I'd also like to play future PC games)).

Budget: US$900 (but maybe try for 800? Lol)
I will buy a monitor, keyboard, and mouse separate so it's all good. All I really am having trouble with is the "tower" build (and OS choice).
I will be using Sony Vegas Pro 8 for the editing.
I want to build it all myself.
I'm assuming I should go for a Quad-core CPU for the HD video editing

Hmm on what resolution shall gaming take place? Yes quads are the way to go for the design of the rig to fulfill these tasks
