I'd rather spend less on a moto G, given the specs it should have been a $99 off contract phone and Amazon would have had a real winner

The phone would have been well priced when it launched, had it been standard Android with Google services. And Moto G is nowhere near. The initial disappointment with the phone came mostly from the fact that unlike the tablets, it was priced to make a profit.

AFAIK all the custom stuff on the phone can be turned off, so that should not be a reason to not get the phone. The lack of Google Play might be (although I'm sure you can sideload it).
