AMD 1100T - 8 monitors for trading - $2000 max

Hi All,

I am using intel i7-920 with 2 NVS-420 that support 8 monitors totally but I really don't like its performance. Finally, I decide to build a new system that still supports for 8 monitors. Here's my information from Newegg and Tigerdirect:


AMD x6-1100T $190
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 $150
Memory corsair vengeance 16gb $100
(two) XFX HD-6950 2GB 256-bit $560 (one card supports 4 monitor)
Corsair 128Gb SSD $220
Seagate 1TB 7200 6gb/s $60
Asus Blu-ray burner $80
Corsair Graphite 600TM Black Case $160
Corsair 950w Power Supply $155
Cooler V8 Heatsink and Fan $46
(four) MiniDP to DVI adapter $100
Windows 7 Pro $140

Total $1961

I greatly appreciate for any comments and opinions.

Have you been able to identify a specific bottleneck? There would be no point in switching the whole rig if the problem had nothing to do with the CPU ...

Moreover, I don't think you need to use video cards that are as high-end as the 6950, a pair of 5770 would probably be enough and cost you half the price; 950W PSU is also overkill, you probably don't need more than 750W, specially if you go with the 5770 instead. Do you really need a Blu-Ray burner, of the 2-3 people I know that have one, none actually use it ...

They might actually be all different programs, but yes, this is part of the "identify bottleneck" task he should be doing prior to just change the rig 😛

I have a few questions for you.

First is there a particular reason you want to use amd? Nothing wrong with it just asking

Second I trade FOREX myself (kinda cool to see someone else here who does)...

Anyway I am building a rig right now that will handle pretty much everything you could need for trading (from my expirience) and its only going to be around $1000 (not including monitors). The only reason I say this is that I feel like you are going overkill on alot of things and you could save the extra 500-1000 and put it into your acc 😀

Anyway with that being said are you looking for critics on your build or do you want someone to post up a build for you to look at?

I dont know which programs the OP is using but I am pretty sure FXCM codes their programs to work on multiple cores/threads.. so I guess the answer to that is... Some are some are not?

Edit: thats a article on windows server monitoring, does the same concepts apply?

The performance monitoring tool is in all versions of Windows since at least Windows XP; some metrics might not be, but I doubt even that. The reason why it's a server article is that IT professionals tend to do that more often that home users 😛.

I was going to suggest he might as well wait for the 6 core Sandy Bridge E, but I had completely forgot that LGA1366 had some 6 cores CPU 😛 He could even go for an i7-980 for ~600$; I don't think the extra 400$ is worth the 130Mhz extra 😛.

I want to use AMD x6 1100T since the price is about $190 and with its six-core I thought it will be better than i7-920.
About the graphic cards 6950, one card support 4 monitors so I thought 2GB it is better 1GB. Other cards like 5000 series or 6770 that I don't see any 2GB.

Any comments is appreciated.

What about going with a sandybridge 2500 ? its only 20 bucks more then the 1100T.. or are you set on amd? For charts you really shouldnt need more then 1GB but if you truly want to spend the money a 2gb wont hurt. Itll just be there incase you need it sometime

Matrox sells a card that can drive eight 2560x1600 screen with "only" 2GB, so if he only uses 1920x1080 monitors he should be OK, moreover, by not crossfiring the cards, the content of the VRAM won't replicate across both so each will have 1GB to drive 4 monitors.

As for the i5-2500(K), I think he wanted the AMD for the 6 cores; depending on the type of application, it might indeed be useful, but who knows.

It's not better. It's actually much slower.

Your right about the video cards, go with the 2gb cards.

Tom Lee: Did you ever build your system?

How is it working for you and what video cards did you use.

I'm getting pretty confused about video cards, how much is necessary and which cards handle how many monitors. I'm also confused as to how much video memory is needed for multiple monitors which are used for the basic 2D graphics used in trading charts although lots of charts. I currently have a system around 3 years old running 3 monitors and I'm thinking of expanding to 6.

I use Tradestation platform. What are you using?

Windows Vista and 7 runs in 3D not 2D. I had to do a build with 8 screens and the guy got a el cheapo PCIe card probably like sub $50 or somewhere around that price range.
I've hooked up to 2 monitor and that thing lagged like hell even when I dragged a simple window (My computer) from one screen to the next, worst part was the screens where running at 1024x768! Disabling 3D was a little better, but not too much. Luckily he just bought one of them (to see if it works) and was able to return it for something with more power.
A mid-range to low high-end card should do the trick. HD5000 series can only drive up to 3 monitors, you will need 3 of them to run up to 8 screens.

OP may have got the system by now!
