AMD 3500+ 939Pin Overclock. Advice? (Manchester Core)

So thats my build. I want to know, can I most likely get a fairly decent overclock from that processor on stock cooling, or would I have to upgrade my fan, and is there anything else about the build that anyone thinks needs looking at?[/list]
 
You could overclock a marginal amount (100-200MHz) safely with the stock cooler. If you're going to overclock, you should probably buy an aftermarket cooler though. While you're at it, you might want to grab some Arctic Silver 5 to get it a few additional degrees cooler.

Build looks good to me. I'd just double the memory for 1gb since it's becoming the standard more of less.
 
Did you buy this already? If your gonna OC, might as well start with 3200+.

I'd grab two gig of ram while he's at it. G.skill 2x1gig ZX, gskill 2x1gig DDR 500 are two cheap rams.

Is it really better to start with the slower processor? I just want it to end up at about the equivalent speed of a 3700 or 3800ish. Also, is it worth getting RAM above PC3200 speed? I thought CorsirValue RAM should do OK.

You should be able to hit 2.5GHz+ with the 3200+, but because the prices are so low now, you might as well go with the 3500+; it's your decision.

Also, you'll want to get at least 1GB of RAM; Corsair XMS is good, but so is that G.skill DDR500.

And why the 6800GT? On newegg, a 6800GT PCIe is $260. An X1800XT is like $220. The X1800XT blows the 6800GT away. For $135, you can get a 7600GT which performs the same as a 6800Ultra.

Forget the 6800GT; why spend money on a card from 2 years ago? If you want high-end, get an X1800XT or 7900GT.
 
i managed 10% OC on stock with a venice 3500 so dont know comparison to manchester changed to different HS and now running a very comftable 15%
 
I have a 3500+, but a newcastle. I managed to overclock it to 2600 Mhz and it's stable.

If you are just gonna get one video card, then you can scrap the Sli mobo too. Are there any non-Sli mobo that's better and cheaper than that ASus for OC?

Oh no, i'm planning on uing the SLI to upgrade to. So instead of paying £300 for another card, Ill just pay another £130 for another lower-end card. And I dont think there is another Mobo at all that is cheaper, with the good chipset I need.
 
ya stick with the asus. however, when you upgrade your video it's better to just grab another low-end card, like 8600GT or something like that. Sli can't double your performance.
 
If i were you...I'd pick a different mobo if you're definately going to oc it. Asus's low end boards aren't known for their oc'ing ability (but then neither are their high end lol).

Also the 7900 gt is going for about $250 right now ... Same price 2x the perf... (there are ones cheaper then 250...but they're the ones that are oc'd from stock that don't keep cool enough...)

Anyway, if you're only looking to hit 3700-3800 speeds ie 2.4ghz...i'd go with: 3500+, 7900GT, 2gb ocz gold 3200(good to 235fsb approx), a8n-sli premium...the premium has a max cpu voltage of 1.5v, so you wouldn't have to worry about cooking your cpu...but at the same time, you wouldn't be able to oc to 3ghz with any amount of cooling (unless you got a chip that would hit 3ghz on 1.5v lol). The epox boards have pretty decent oc'ing and are fairly easy to work with. Asus boards have avg to low oc'ing and are very easy to work with and get going. DFI boards have the best oc'ing and are nearly impossible to work with heh.

I'd recommend the 3500 only because it's already at 2.2ghz, and would only need a small oc to reach 2.4. You could do 2.5 or 2.6 without any heat problems. The other side of this is the 3200 thats been recommended...It's at 2.0, and would need to go to 2.4...Easily done, and alot cheaper then the 3500. You'd need either oc on a divider (which is pretty easy to do) or you'd need ram that could do 240fsb or better(which the ocz gold stuff can't do...that i've recommended...there's more expensive ram that could though...such as the ocz gold 4000 stuff, or ocz premium 4000).

Epox Sli - $94 --Best deal, and better oc'ing options then Asus
Asus Prem Sli - $154 Newegg --has been rock solid for me...but doesn't oc very far 1.5vcore max
 
I'm running a 3500 Venice core at 2688mhz with a 1.5v 10.5multi.
Granted im also running 4gigs of memory on a gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 mobo. Cooling is water with a pelt but it tends to get unstable over 2700. If you had a really good fan with good case flow i think you could hit 2.5 no problem. Just my 2 cents.

the corsair ddr500 link goes to the g. skill, which is one of the best deal on ddr if you only care about OC.

X1800XT 256mb is also cheap, so you can choose that as an alternative to 7900GT. Some of the GT's have failure problem so you wanna check out which manufacturer's specific board is failing.
 
My CPU is 3500+ Clawhammer and it runs regularly @2.475GHz (225x11) with AMD stock cooler, stock VCore and standard 5x HT.
Temps are 35°C idle and 44°C full load.
 
Thankyou all so much for your help. I realise thoguh, from your advice, that I might be trying a little too hard. I'll admit, trying to convert everything to Ghz and back to the relevent equivelent in AMD terms is hard, but I figure I can buy myself a 3200+, and overclock it to about 3700+ speeds, if I get myself a decent fan, but I'll need some good RAM to acheive this too. Am I right?
 
You messed up when buying your processor. The Athlon 64 Venice 3800, a 2.4 at stock, is only 147 bucks right now over at newegg. Thats an fx 53 that couldn't make the "cache count", so they renamed it. That chip, with a minor fudge on the voltage would give you 2.8, ( fx 57 ), speed without a problem.

I havent bought it yet, and I'm not buying from newegg, im from the UK, so my prices are different.
 
yes, you're right...if you spend some time at overclocking your gear and even without spending tons of money on watercooling or very expensive ram ( ,if you take your time, read some info on the net, do it right, try again now and then ) you can have an awesome system for very little cash. I would say you can't go wrong with that amd 3200+ and some corsair, geil or... value ram considering their cost and potential,

Ok, so ive just checked out overclockers.co.uk as opposed to my normal supplier, and their prices are about a zillion times better. I couldn't find that 4000+ you mentioned, but I think I'll be using them definately either way. So, I have decided (because of the cheaper price) to make a new specification:

I'm aware that the PSU isnt something to sing and dance about, but TBH, I probably wont overclock this one a huge amount. I definately wont be increasing the VCore or anything. Havent decided on a Graphics Card yet, will decide on it later, and get it off eBay so that my dad doesnt kill me for spending so much on PCs (<-- Clever).

Anyway, I should be able to raise that to the equivalent of a 4000+ EASILY, and, as someone said, perhaps up to an FX-55 or FX-57. Well, I live and hope.
 
Looks good. I'd still push for a different motherboard if you can find one...but if you're not going to push the vcore it doesn't really matter so long as you can adjust the fsb on that motherboard. Good luck!
