AMD 3500+ Winchester Core

All,

I was about to order a bunch of components from newegg.com in order to build a new system, when I discovered that the AMD Athlon 64, 3500+ Winchester Core (90 nm) RETAIL version is no longer listed. I called customer service and they told me that they don't even have the part on order. I said that I was surprised as it was my understanding that the Winchester core chips were the newer ones, but he didn't know why they were dropped.

Does anyone know what's up with the AMD Winchester core chips, specifically the 3500+? (They sell the OEM version but I'd rather have the fan and the better warranty.)

They're switching over to the Venice and San Diego cores. They're both newer than the Winchesters.

Venice core happenned. Basically the next revision. Supposed to be equal to better oc'in ability, and other minor improvements. (SSE3 too I think)

The most significant change is in the ODMC. It works better with multiple sticks or ram.

Thanks to all for your respnses - it explains a lot. I had already decided to move up to the AMD 3700+ which is a San Diego core. But to further confuse things, today newegg.com has the 3500+ Winchester listed again and now the 3700+ San Diego has vanished from their web site. Odd.

Those be the breaks when dealing with a company that works with minimal stocking. :\

I like Newegg for a lot of things, but sometimes they drive me nuts with that kind of stuff. :O

Forget Newegg for this one. <A HREF="http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80719-5" target="_new">ZipZoomFly</A> has the 3700+ retail for $20 less including shipping. I ordered one from them on Thursday and got it on Monday.
