I recently built my first pc about a month ago. After playing for a bit, I decided I wanted an upgrade from my stock cooler to a Castle 240EX by Gamers Nexus. I spent the better part of my night replacing the stock cooler due to a couple of issues. First, the CPU came out with the stock cooler as I was removing it, the lock mechanism was still in place. I checked for bent pins and saw none and after cleaning the GPU of old thermal paste, I decided to move on with my replacement. Second, once I finished installing the cooler, I wouldn’t even boot. No lights besides the RGB on the mobo. After removing the cooler and CPU again, cleaning the PCB underneath where some thermal paste got to and installing, I finally got it to boot, but no post. Only a steady orange/yellow light on the Mobo. After checking the manual, I swapped slots for my ram to the following; both sticks on A1 and B1 instead of A2 and B2, one of the sticks in each slot by itself, and the other stick in each slot by itself. No changes at all to the light. I am looking for further diag and troubleshooting steps in order to save my system. You guys are my only hope.

Build is as follows:
  • Asus Rog Strix B450-F Gaming (3000 series ready btw)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600x
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8)
  • EVGA 2070 Super
  • CX650M PSU by Corsair

other than bent pins, are there any pins missing that might have come off. Yea the lock mechanism is not something i like about amd cpus. So what people do to remove the cpu cooler is start the system up to get the thermal paste warm, shutdown and then they slide the cooler off instead of pulling it up which reduces the risk of the cpu coming out with the cooler.

Check if the 8pin and 24pin is connected properly, try reseating the cpu and giving it a tad bit more mounting pressure, they tend to need a bit higher mounting pressure than normal sometimes

I wish I saw about running a benchmark earlier, would have save me a lot of headache today hahaha, I’m going to try and reseat it today, no missing pins as far as I can tell. Once I have the cpu out again, I’m going to cross reference a photo and double check just to be sure. Fingers crossed.

Pretty sure I killed my cpu by removing it so forcefully, I saw some slightly bent pins and after trying every troubleshooting tactic under the sun, I’ve either killed the cpu or Mobo. Just ordered another cpu, let’s hope that’s the issue. Let’s call this and expensive lessons learned in cpu building. Will update on Tuesday once I get my new cpu in there if my system is working.

Would I have any ground to stand on for a Manufacturer’s Warranty is the problem is the CPU or the Mobo?
