AMD 4000+ unclockable after new RAM!

I have Asus M2A-VM with AMD 4000+ (2.1GHz). I had it over clocked to 2.78Ghz with Corsair 1GB PC2-5400 DDR2-667. But now with my new RAM (info below) I am unable to over clock my CPU.

These were my OC settings prior to the installation of this RAM:

I can't over clock my CPU at all now. I reset my settings back to default and started from the beginning but as soon as I increase the CPU Frequency, my computer freezes at bootup. I have to press the shut down button for 5 seconds for it to shut down and reboot in order to access the BIOS. I've updated my BIOS to the latest version but that did not help. I can't over clock my cpu AT ALL! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This ram is kind of useless to me now that I can't OC my cpu. Now I'm back to stock 2.1Ghz 🙁

Sounds like a RAM problem. OCZ RAM often has such issues. Try running memtest86+ O/N to make sure it shows 0 errors, then try a stress-testing program based on PRIME95 in a "blend" or "balanced" mode that stresses both memory and CPU.
 
What are your memory timings and speed? You might try lowering your speed to ddr2 667 and then ramping it up from there. At default settings your mobo probably set your speed to ddr2 800.
 
hmph i got the sli ready ocz ram and i got from 2.7-3.2ghz, they i bsod everytime now i guess i might try 667mhz. thanks for helping me kinda but not directly lol.
 
Dude, that RAM needs 2.2V to run at it's default speed and timings, that sux. You should Run Memtest to check for errors first, but if it turns up clean, and you have it at 2.2v of course, you may have a hard time RMAing it. If you are going to want to keep the RAM you are going to have to do a few things. I suspect that the RAM you have is really meant to be DDR2 667 but OCZ clocked the crap out of it and sold it to you as cheap DDR2 800 RAM. Losen the timings and raise the CPU divider to lower the speed. Getting the RAM past 400MHz (800 effective) isn't going to be doable if it needs 2.2V just to run at DDR2 800. Set the RAM speed to 667, which will put your divider at 7, and loosen the RAM timings, then increase your FSB. Remember Athlon 64 CPUs get the RAM speed by dividing the cpu core speed by a divider to get the RAM speed.
 
Wow, thanks a lot guys! I've asked for help in many different forums and from many people and no one helped me like you guys did. I lowered the RAM from DDR2 800 to 667 and now I can OC my cpu once again! I guess the issue is with my motherboard and not so much with the RAM? And how do I losen the "RAM timings"? This is how my BIOS looks:

I have my CPU at 2.36Ghz right now with 10.5 CPU multiplier and 1.30v NBSB. I lowered the Memory Clock Frequency to DDR2 667 as you can see in screenshot 2.

Well then right now your RAM is running at about 674MHz since your CPU is using a memory divider of 7. You need to either set your ram voltage higher, 2.2v is it's spec, in order to overclock more. You could also lower the RAM speed another step to 533 which should give you a memory divider of 8 and would allow you to raise your FSB to 256 (giving you a CPU speed of about 2.69) without changing any other memory settings or voltage from what you have right now, assuming your board doesn't try and tighten the timings of course.
 
I lowered my RAM to 667Mhz and OC'd my CPU to 2.5Ghz. 238Mhz x 10.5 multiplier. But I can't OC past this. I tried lowering my RAM to 533Mhz and still no luck. Increased the NBSB voltage and CPU voltage and again no luck. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that I used to be able to OC my cpu all the way up to 2.8Ghz. My CPU temp is perfectly fine at below 30c on IDLE.
 
The forum software sucks, I can't click on your link for your ram. Please provide us with your ram settings, both what they are and what they should be. Also provide all relevant OC settings, including ram voltage. Without a refresher as to what your running, I'm not sure where your at.

If you look at the pictures of the BIOS I posted, you'll see that there isn't much I can do about settings. It's all basic. These are my settings atm:

238Mhz x 10.5 = 2499 Mhz
 
You need to hit 266 or 267 in order to hit 2.8GHz. To be very certain, drop the LDT down to 600, it shouldn't make much difference anyways. Bump the "CPU frequency" up to 265 like you had before. Do the same with the voltage. (1.4v?) Bring the ram down to 667MHz. You might need to max out the memory voltage of 2.1v. It should boot at these settings, if it doesn't, the new memory simply doesn't work well with your system. Find something on the vendor approved list and try again.

What voltage does your memory support? If it needs 2.2v to hit 800MHz, what timings does it supposed to have? What voltage for 667MHz?
 


Thanks a million, dropping the LDT down to 600 seems to have resolved the issue. I have my CPU OC'd to 2667Mhz at the moment. It didn't give me any BSOD or crashes so far and it's been an hour since I OC'd. But I read somewhere that in order to preserve the lifespan of my CPU, I have to make sure the temperature is below 50c at all times. That's not the case here, after 10 minutes of P95 CPU stress test, my temperatures rose to 53c. Here are my OC settings atm:

DDR2 Voltage.............2.1v
CPU Voltage Control.....AUTO
CPU Multiplier.............10.5
CPU Voltage...............1.30v (according to SPEEDFAN the temp is 1.33v and I believe it is correct)

LDT............................600Mhz

254Mhz x 10.5 = 2667 Mhz

I am actually satisfied with this result so far. I don't want to OC it anymore but at the same time I want to lower my CPU temperature. Maybe I should drop the CPU voltage to AUTO (which is 1.28v in speedfan). Is it safe for me to do this?

EDIT: I should note that my CPU is idling at 30-32c whereas it used to idle at 26-28c before this new overclock.
 
Well, you shouldn't really be concerned unless it starts going over 55c. You may want to consider a good aftermarket cooler and adding some better case fans to improve your ventilation. Even so, AMD dual cores are so cheap now adays if you burned out the one you have, you can get something like a 5600 Brisbane CPU from Newegg for less than $70 that has a default clock higher than your currently overclocked 4000.
 
The LDT is the hyper transport bus, and should NEVER go above 1GHz. Your doesn't list the multiplier, but the 200 = 1x, 400 = 2x, etc. 265 * 3 = 795, which is below 1GHz. You might even be able to use 800 (4x), as that only puts you at 1060, which isn't much more then 1GHz. By leaving it on auto, it might have been using 5x, which is 1325MHz, much to high.

If the temps are high, try lowering the CPU Vcore. It might be able to go down a bit without lowering stability. I wouldn't worry to much until your load temps cross 55-60c. I think 70c something is the upper limit. Glad you got it working, now try tweaking everything until its as fast as can be!
 
I have both side panels of the computer case removed. I have added 2 extra fans INSIDE the case, 1 sitting on top of the GPU blowing air on the CPU & NB, then I have one sitting at the bottom of the case next to the HDD. Here is a picture 😛

I think I was worrying too much about the temperature to be honest. It's idling at 30c right now and it reaches 45c when I'm in game which is perfect. So I decided to OC it a bit more and now it's at 259Mhz x 10.5 = 2.72 Ghz. Now there is one more question I have which I have been looking for answers to for quiet some time now. It's not relevent to the topic here but I'll post it here anyways since you guys seem to know a lot about this kind of stuff and have helped me solve this puzzle. I'll paste it here:

Ever since I got this PC from a friend, which is about a year ago, I have been experiencing issues with Counter-Strike Source. It is the only game on my PC and basically when I load it up, my game is perfectly fine with 100fps (cap'd) constant. Then slowly slowly the FPS drops and after about an hour I would have to restart my computer to be able to play again at 100FPS. People used to always tell me that it was an issue with the RAM. So I went ahead and replaced my Corsair 1GB PC5300 DDR2-667 with the aforementioned. But the problem still persists. I know of many other people in the community with the same processor who have no problem at all with the game. I have reinstalled Windows a few times and that didn't help either. I have been looking for answers to this for quiet some time now and will appreciate any help and clues as to what might be causing this very frustrating and annoying problem. Thank you!
 
I'm not sure if all 8 series cards had this problem or just the 8800 series. I remember hearing about the 8800GTS 320MB card having this kind of issue. It had something to do with the small amount of ram, and something in the card filling up. The solution was to either exit the game and restart, or simple alt-tab out then back in. That would clear the buffer, and the game could resume again. Again, I'm not sure if the 8600GT has the same issue, but at 256MB it has the same small buffer.

Other issues could be a heat build up, or perhaps your weak PSU. You seem to have fixed the heat problem, perhaps PSU? (Or the card.)
