AMD 5000+ BE stuck at 2.91ghz!

Hey!
I'v Been fighting with this 5000+ chip since i bought it and it will not get over 3ghz for me.

Heres some details:

ASUS M2N-E
AMD 5000+ BE
G.SKILL 4GB (4 x 1GB) - DDR2 800 - 5-5-5-15
Antec earthwatts 430wt
VisionTek HD 3850 256MB
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10

Heres what works.
14.5x @ 200mhz fsb . DDR @ 800 - work dead rock solid
ran prime95 for 8 hours peaks at 58 degees. no errors.
ran memtest86 for 8 hours, no errors.

Heres what dosen't
15@200 w/ddr800 blue screen
14.5@207 w/ddr800 blue screen
15@200 w/ddr667 blue screen
14.5@207 w/ddr667 runs but programs crash like mad (3dmarks03 and 06 and prime all crashed)
i'v tried all these test with Vcore from 1.35 up to 1.45 (which should be plenty) - No change
DDR from 1.8 - 1.95 no chance (worse on the higher end actully)
i'v used auto settings for timings(ddr, cpu, pci-e) and i'v manually set the factory specs. No go.

running out of ideas here. I though i could just set 15-16x @ 200 with stock voltage and go. kinda disapointed. Not that the little extra is going to blow my socks off but i'd like to know whats holding me back. I feel its ram related. To be honest i think the G.skill stuff is the root problem.

any ideas?

I have a 5000+ but I am not familiar with your board, currently I use a M2N-Sli Deluxe. But I can tell you what I did maybe it will assit you.

Anyways,

Only way I can get stable at 3.2 - 3.3 is to reduce the Mulitplier to 12.5 then increase the fsb. I am stable at 16X200 @3.2 but it actually looses about 300 points in 3dmark06 vs increasing the fsb to 260 and multiplier to 12.5. Anything above 3.25 I have to increase my vcore to 1.4375v to make it stable. Also to make it stable I have to run my memory @ 1.95 and just auto all the timings.

I am not sure if you lowered it and tried raising the fsb to counter, just remember to reduce the HT to X4 or reduce your memory to 667. My board will not allow me to run a high HT link 1050ish before I get blue screens so.

As far as the ram being your problem have you ran memtest on it? I had a set of G.Skill 2gb DDR800 in my system and it was a bad experience. I went with Corsiar xms2 4gb.

I doubt this will help you in anyway but maybe give you a few pointers in the least.

Sorry for asking but what kind of cooling are you using? 58 seems pretty high for this chip and with your current speed seems very high to me. Again I could be wrong but I am going off of my system, I top out at 49c running Orthos/Prime etc (Idle is 29-31c). That is at 3.25ghz. If I push it to 3.3 it goes up to 52c load, 33 idle.

Also I was tired when I posted last night I see that you did run memtest for 8hrs. Only other thought is maybe it's getting too hot. Sorry for not being able to assist more.

All I can say is, I just helped build a new machine, with a MOBO that supports AM2/AM2+. 4GB 1066 Memory, and AMD 5000+ BE.

Before we did anything I went into the BIOS, change the multiplier to 15, and it has been running around 3016 just fine with zero issues.

i use a asus x-mars cooler. my room is very warm though usully in the 80s cooling can be in issue but i dont think it is one here. 58 peak at 8 hours is fine. Its blue screening even before it gets up into the 50s.

I wouldn't think the chip is bad. its brand new from new stock. runs perfect at 2.91 but im not going to pull the cooler to look at the part number :/ though i probally should.

i tried 15@200 x 1.400v tonight and its boots and runs fine however prime fails after 30 seconds. kinda an emprovement but the prime errors dont leave me warm and fuzzy. so i tried soemthing dirrent. skipped over 15 and went right for 15.5x 200fsb @ 1.400 and thinking maybe its a problem with 15x? ...nope. pc wouldnt even post. had to pull the jumper and reset her.

I'm wondering if im having a power suppy issue. asus prob and cpuz dont say the same thing. cpuz is way out in left field. says like 1.280 when i was set for 1.400. asus reads 1.430 when i was set for 1.400. and at one point while running prime asus spiked down to 0.900 for maybe 5 seconds.

I dont have a lot of experience with this matter, but I set my vcore in the bios to say 1.4375 and cpuz and other programs read it as 1.22-1.32. From what I have been told it's caused from vdroop from the programs. If anything can you Rma the cpu back? Not sure where you bought it from or if it's possible after you tried to overclock it. Just another suggestion.

psu could be a problem, never have really trusted antec myself. I've always used enermax and ocz, course just a quirk I have. Also another thing I can think of is if asus hasn't fixed a little issue they had with bios (mainly my board) that causes the voltage not to work correctly past 1.350 unless you select overvolt v-core.

maybe i can get some stability if i keep upping the volts but come on.. 1.400 should be more then enough for 3.0

more volts = more heat and honestly i dont think my fans up to too much heavier of a job.

1.425v 15x @ 200fsb seems to run ok. maxes at about 66 degrees though which is too high for my likeing. passes prime95 though. big improvment.


ok soo... seems i can push further but requires a LOT more volts and LOTS more cooling. anyone eanna take a crack at why?

3.0ghz should be fine at 1.35v. 2.91 is fine... why does 3.0 beed 1.425. seems extreem.

i did just reseat my heatsink and changed over to artic silver 5 oposed to asus goo stuff. well see if we can drop down a few degrees with this stuff.

what else can i do?

Hi i just got done reading your post your setup is similar to mine just the motherboard. I think the cpu isn't the problem. The problem sounds like your board. Try running it on a ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe.

I have mine running at 3.21ghz 12hr stability test with Everest full edition
Now its time to do some fine tuning to get it to 3.3ghz
Something odd with my cpu it came right out of the box 2.8ghz

But all i did was change the multiplier 16x, bump the vcore. and everything else on auto settings.

Brisbane 5000 @ 3.21ghz
Silver Zalman 9700 idle 24c Maxload 51c after 12hrs (keep in mind i live in california)
200x16 vcore 1.425

If the motherboard isn't the problem then look into getting a new power supply.

i dont know about your motherboard but i had the same problem on my 5200+ brisbane (not black) so what i did is put the ht multiplyer at 1 the width at 16 and put the hypertransport from 200 to 235 and i was up past 3.2
