Im running a AMD X2 6000+ 3.1Ghz with a Thermaltake TR2-R1 cooler. I have a MSI K9N2 mobo. My processor sits at 40-45c Idle, and hits about 70c full load while playing heros of newerth, which keeps crashing and I cannot figure out why. Is 70 high for this cpu?

Hmmmm??.What are you using for a T I M ??, I use AC5,you only need the thickness of a cigarette papers worth, maybe you need to look at your overall ventilation,I am running an AMD 7850 with an Arctic Cooler 64Pro and right now my cpu is at 44c,so maybe whilst working 70c is not so bad???..
AS for your crashing if you get a BSOD,,then you need to go to my computer, system, advanced, and under debugging etc set the system for no auto restart, windoze will then display an error mess.,, at the BSOD it will either be a file error or a ram error, also sometimes reinstalling both video and directx will fix the problem, windoze sometimes eats files and as gamers we need to keep our hdd's reasonably defragged,,,, http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag ,,,
Get the fastest little degragger available anywhere...:)

40-45c at idle is a bit high, and 70 at load is too hot.

I used to have a very similar cooler and it would cool a bit better than that. I assume since you wrote @ 3.1Ghz you've left it at 3.1Ghz and haven't overclocked it (which is good at this point!).

What is your ambient temperature? If it is simply hot in your house and humid, then yeah, the computer will run warm. Is the case itself getting enough air flow?

You could also try what dokk explained, maybe when you swapped out the HSF the thermal goo wasn't applied 100% right. You really want that stuff as thin as possible while still covering the entire chip.

I would, check to make sure your computer isn't running as it should with ambient. Check to make sure overall case airflow is good, and maybe reapply the thermal gel to make sure the best possible seat.

As far as the crashing, i would go with dokk suggested, however, if you mean crashing as in....restarting the machine or turning the machine off.... that would more than likely mean you're overheating and you need to figure out the temperature situation right away before the chip gets hurt.

Best of luck

Thanks for the responses. My house thermostat is set to 78F. but in my room, while Im playing I have no doubt it being in the low 80s. I am about to move back to my apartment in college where we keep it at 72-73 which should help tremendously. Ill open up my HSF and see if the thermal paste is on right. so that stuff should be on super thin, ok.

I have 1 front fan blowing in, 1 side fan blowing in and a rear fan blowing out. So I believe my airflow is near correct. I mean to be honest, I think its gotta be the thermal paste, but ill check it.

Also, my computer doesn't restart or reboot at all. So its probably not a overheating problem. I just thought of overheaing being the problem so I started monitoring my temps and I saw that they seemed high.

Well, thin is good, too little is bad. The idea of the thermal gel is to cover any micro cracks and whatnot. Thin layer evenly over the entire cpu surface ~ AS3?... i personally don't know if that is like AS5, but if it is there is a slight "curing" time, so the temps may go down as you use the comp a bit more (someone correct me if i'm wrong but 200 hours or something?).

If the ambient temp is in the low 80's, i don't think 40c is unreasonable, but would be more concerned with the load temps.

Is your full load temp still cresting 70? If it is, then yeah you may want to consider a better HSF, if it isn't, then i would chalk it up to the ambient temp (though a better HSF should always make a difference).

here is a good site to look into before getting a HSF..

just scroll down a bit for the AMD ones.

I'm running a Sunbeam Core Contact myself and love it, it made a huge difference, though the thing is massive. You may consider measuring the area where the HSF will go to ensure it will fit.

as said before, good luck =D

my 6000+ idles around 45 cpu and the cores around 48-52, load the cores go up to around 55-56. I'm using a newer phenom type cooler that somebody on here was nice enough to include w\ the 6000 when i bought it !

70 is definitely too hot... are you overclocked?
