AMD 8350 upgrade to what?

Hello everyone! So my payday is coming up soon and I'm going to be investing in a new CPU! I am running a gaming rig and I use my PC for that very purpose (no graphics, or real-time video editing, ect. ect.)

I originally built my PC with an AMD board to save a few bucks and so far my experience has been well.

The CPU I originally put into my PC was the AMD 8350 ... 3.8GHz base clock with a 4.0GHz "Turbo" feature.

I'm looking at either the AMD 9590 or the AMD 9370. Would either of these be meaningful upgrades?

Not looking to switch to Intel, thank you :)

Also looking to keep it under $350

First you must have a motherboard that will support 9590/9370 if you plan to go that route.

I had my 8350 running perfectly at 4.7 G. with a first gen sabertooth board.

With a second gen sabertooth board i'm running my 9590 at 4.7/5.0.

Bottom line is the only place where the 9590 outperforms the 8350 overclock is when turbo mode is used (a couple of threads running at max utilization).

Does your mother board support anything higher than a 8350? Also the base clock for that CPU is 4GHz and turbo 4.2GHz. There really is no point in going to either of the higher CPU when you could just over clock your existing one to reach the same speed.

As it turns out, my old Gigabyte 970A-UD3 doesn't list anything higher than a 8350...

So now I'm confused. Should I literally jump ship and buy an intel board with a cheaper i7? Will it make a meaningful difference?

Unless you really cant stand money in your pocket...or you are running into problems running games...you don't have to do anything.

With 8 core processors in both the ps4 and microsoft consoles you can expect things to get "better", not "worse" with 8-core amd processors.

Nope. I'll pass on overclocking anything. I'm dead serious now. I don't have a lot of money to buy a replacement CPU - so please stop suggesting it 😛

So frusterating... people are saying my 8350 bottlenecks my r9 290??? for real?

Im running a 8320 at 4ghz, basically a 8350 and it handles my crossfire 7970 no prob so u shouldnt see a bottleneck. I would not go with one of the 9xxx 8 cores for the amount of heat produced and power used and the performance gain from them would not be worth the money

nope. that sounds like an idiot suggesting it. in what way do you think an 8350 will bottleneck a r9-290?

I own a 8320, sure it's overclocked, but i work with i5s all the time, there is almost no difference between the two. So be a bit more specific and maybe we can help you figure out what's going on.

@Ingtar33 - Well people have suggested it... I've also noticed absolutely no frame rate improvement in Elder Scrolls online when switching out my GTX 660 Ti and my AMD R9 290... just HOW can that be? In some places the R9 290 seems to preform worse!

What framerate were you getting?
Do you have vertical sync on?
What resolution are you running?

ESonline uses a derivative of the skyrim engine. so basically that fx8320 ain't gonna give you what you need, even upgrading to a higher clocked fx won't do you any good.

My frame rate says high, but stutters uncontrollably when moving around... I think due to rendering. I play at a 1980x1080 res, everything on max except shadows and view distance... 16GB of RAM and 4GB on the GPU... not sure why there is so much slowdown

Have a look at your gpu and cpu usage, if your GPU usage is dropping then you have a CPU bottleneck.

It would be entirely the game's fault though. I run three 7970's and they do not get bottlenecked by my 8350 in Battlefield 4

Try this? http://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/21t8vr/fix_stuttering_freezing_fps_drop/

ah... that's the games fault not the cpu.

see skyrim is coded using the same x87 code they used in the first elder scrolls game 20 years ago... x87 is not an industry supported coding language so AMD dropped support on piledriver/bulldozer. Intel, continues to provide support for x87 coding.

You will probably see 60fps (or close enough anyway)... if you overclock that 8350 up to 4.6ghz~

Outside of horribly legacy coded games like skyrim and civ5 there really should be no disadvantage rolling with an 8 core FX cpu. And if you put a little effort into overclocking that cpu those disadvantages should melt away anyway.

all the 9590 is, is an overclocked 8350. An 8350 should be good enough for all games that aren't single thread intensive. If you're playing alot of single thread intensive games you'd be better off with an intel, typically MMOs are.

Overclocking really isn't something to be scared of, just look up a guide on how to do it. If you refuse to overclock and you're not happy with your 8350, then get an i7. If you don't have money to get a better cpu I'm not sure why you're asking for help then if you won't do it
