AMD A10-6700 OVERHEATING ON IDLE ~108 Degrees Celcius

Hi all, I'm going to cut to the crap really quickly. First off, my specs are as follows:

  • ■ CPU: AMD A10-6700 APU
    ■ GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 645 OEM
    ■ PSU: 300W Stock PSU (Internal)
    ■ STORAGE: 2TB SATA IDE
    ■ RAM: 8GB DDR3
    Stock CoolerMaster Fans
    ■ Computer:HP Pavilion 500-260ea
Windows 10 64-Bit (Upgraded last year).

PROBLEM I AM FACING
The issue I am facing is that every 30 seconds or so, the CPU FAN blasts up to 4200RPM as oppose to the regular ~1800RPM. I believe this is an attempt to cool the CPU which gets to ~115 degrees Celcius down to ~108 degrees Celcius- this is while the PC is only at the desktop.

This issue has not been resolved with multiple restarts. This issue first started after a YouTube video entering full screen crashed the PC (screen flickers, goes black, cursor flickers, and then disconnect sound plays) and I had to resolve multiple black screens after unsuccessful boot ups.

I have had this YouTube issue multiple times in the last month and the video driver would often uninstall/ disable. I assumed this was a GPU issue due to the flickering screen. However, I did not check temperature of GPU or CPU and I cannot replicate the error. A couple weeks ago, I stopped shutting it down, instead putting into sleep mode. Recently I began frequently powering down the machine instead.

So in short, the problem seems to be that the CPU is far too hot and this causes abnormal fan usage for a PC bought only three years ago. Any help would be well appreciated as soon as possible.

I have not opened the PC up to clear it yet. Upon external inspection, however, I can see dust bunnies but more importantly I can see the fan appears to be at an angle parallel to the CPU. Some other HP fans seems to be like this in support videos.

Thanks in advance, Akram.

By the way, we just went through a heatwave when the issue occurred. No ventilation in my room. I have a video on my phone of the fans acting up.

Solution
You might not be able to tell just by looking at it. I suggest buying a tube of thermal paste, pulling it off, cleaning it, and remounting it with fresh paste.

Last year, my computer would just give me a BSOD when it overheated. Now, both Speccy and CPUID Hardware Monitor and a Fan Controller software all say the same stats.

Hi, thanks for the link. I will install overdrive and report back to you. Right now I am using my brother's PC to reduce stress on my other one. Even then, if Overdrive gives me the right temperature, how will i stop the fans going onto full blast? BTW using latest NVidia Drivers from a couple weeks ago.

Hi just installed OD. The minute it opened, I got the fan blast again. I hadn't had one before that and the system had been up for 13 minutes. Then three came in the space of two minutes. Right now I am getting a thermal margin which is very erratic- sometimes as high as 12 or 13, then it falls to 3 or 4, sometimes -0.1. The blasts are now starting regularly and there is no pattern between them and the thermal margin reading. :??:

Other programs report temperatures incorrectly on AMD CPUs, so you might as well uninstall them. Overdrive is the only one that gives you the proper reading. With a thermal margin of 12 or 13, you still have 12 or 13 degrees before it's too hot. When it gets to 0, your CPU is too hot and it may throttle to protect itself, but you're not going to damage your PC by running this way.

It sounds to me like your cooler is not mounted correctly. I would remove it, clean it, and replace it with fresh thermal paste.

Ah right. Thanks for the explanation- I still didn't understand quite what overdrive was telling me. Do you have any recommendations for a new cooler? Does it matter what size I buy in relation to my PSU?

Right. Will buy a tube ASAP and will report back. Thank you so much for the quick support though- it has been crucial to helping with the problem. Do you recommend me only pulling off the cooler when I have the paste? I'm opening it up to remove all dust anyways.

To be honest, I'm not quite sure. I don't have a huge amount of money so I will wait until I order some. However, after coming back from dinner almost two hours ago. I'm getting about 20 degrees on the thermal margin and sometimes as high as 30 degrees. Is this normal? I think it may have just been the recent heatwave. Also, I think it may have been caused by the fact that I was soldering RIGHT NEXT to the PC case for an hour or so, and I got rid of all ventilation in the room because I didn't want room fans blowing away the screws I working with. I'll give it a couple days or so and maybe then buy some thermal paste.

Opened up PC today and found the heatsink of my CPU was caked and so was my GPU. Margin now reading above 50 and below 60 on average, so I guess it just needed a little clean.
