Workstation/HPC cards are a standard length. I suspect it's a single GPU, and requires additional molex connectors and jiggawatts at the PCIe slot.

@zentrope You'd be even more amazed to find that the machines these are used in may not even have a display attached. The output is a waste of space on most of these. Look up nVidia's Tesla cards. No space wasted on display outputs.
