AMD APU vs. CPU

Which is generally better? Trying to decide between the: AMD FX-8320 8 Core and the AMD A10 7850k Black Edition. Not planning on using the integrated graphics but I will want to use crossfire with it if the APU is better.

I'm actually considering building a very similar PC to yours. Can you tell me what fps some of your games run at?

FX-8320 by a mile

The A10 is about the equivalent of an fx-4300, not to mention the efficiency of the APU is so low.

The only advantage the entire FM2 lineup has is the integrated GPU being just good enough to play games on low to medium.

My graphics card is a bit outdated. And I haven't played the most recent games as of late due to lack of time. I can tell you that league of legends runs at a solid 60 fps at max settings. Assassin's Creed games from the first up to Assassin's Creed Revelations run at 60 fps with some drops to exactly 40 fps and back to 60 (might be bad programming). Battlefield 3 worked perfectly although I never did run benchmarks on it.

The AMD 7850K is a showpiece on how far AMD's integrated graphics have come. That is all it is, as an actual useful processor the applications for it to my mind are almost none existent. It's a jack of all trades and a master of none. It would make a great HTPC processor if it didn't run so hot but unfortunately it does... oh well.

As much as I like AMD their only processors that make sense at the moment (from a home consumer standpoint) are the 65w APU's in HTPC's, the AM1 platform for a NAS when they bring out more suitable boards and the FX 6300. IMO everything else is a waste of either money or power.

The FX Cpus are generally better than the APUs (until now) the only advantage of an APU is the integrated GPU which why they made an APU anyway, if you're not planing to use the integrated GPU never consider the APU in the first place go with the FX 8320 it's much much better.

If you're only doing gaming the FX-6300 will be more than enough, the 8320 doesn't perform any better than the
FX-6300 in games because most games don't use more than 3 cores.

What games are you looking to play?

Yes for sure I will update the card. I'm looking at a R9. I'm hoping that my new PC will be able to play most games from 2014 at 1080p with medium settings.

Oh that will definitely be no problem. It'll probably be able to reach max for a lot of them, depending on your card.
