AMD Athlon 64 X 2, 3100 VS AMD Phenom X 4 2.2

Hi I am upgrading my system, I am not sure which CPU i should purchase, I am looking for something with overall performance. Either AMD Athlon 64 X 2, 6000+, 3.1GHz, or AMD Phenom X 4 9500, 2.2GHz. If you can help me decide on which one is better. Also, whichever AMD processor is better can you tell me how it compares VS Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8Ghz.

Are those your only options? What will you be using your system for?

You should get a Phenom 2 if at all possible, but check if it works on your board.

The Athlon would probably be better for gaming, the Phenom 1 would be better at encoding and other well multithreaded applications.

I'd try to get a Phenom 2 720 if you could, though. It will handle far more instructions per clock and OC much better.

I will be using Asus M3N78-VM. I have 4GB of Corsair DDR2 PC 6400, 800MHz, I am also using XFX 9600GSO 768MB, and 550Watts Power Supply. I am looking for something around 100 - 120, The 2 AMDs fall in that price range. I want to use it to game for the next 5 months, then I will be looking to sell it to get a laptop, so overall performance VS just gaming would be better. Thanks

If it's the 9500 and not the 9550 then you have the buggy phenom and you can knock another10-15% off the top of the performance unless you disable the TLB protection. Even if its the 9550 without the bug on most of todays software it's not likely to get close to the X2 6000+ although Ms Vista will rate it higher, take it from me it's total BS, the X2 is faster. I swapped a 9600 out for an X2 6000+ after I could no longer believe Vista that the CPU in system 1 was faster than the one in system 2. And guess what my gaming software agreed with my gut feeling, some gains nearly 50% and all I did was swap out the cpu. Lesson, don't believe everything you read.

For gaming the 6000 will do better due to the high clock speed and lack of quad support in most games. You should be able to find 1 for under $100.

If you want to see how they compare to the E7400 look at the CPU charts on this website, it should have all these processors on there. The E7400 will win most benchmarks.
