Current System:Gateway GM5470E
Current(OEM) MOBO: ECS-MCP61PM-AM (Socket AM2)
Current(OEM) BIOS: Phoenix 6.0 - 4/27/07
Current(OEM)CPU: AMD Athlon 64x2 4000+
Current Memory: 4Gb 667Mhz
Current OS: Windows Vista PHE -32-bit (All Current Upgrades)

I'm upgrading my 2 year old multi-media computer to get a few more miles out of it.

I recently bought an AMD Athlon 64x2 5600+ Brisbane 2.9Ghz CPU. Plug and Play, right?

Unfortunately, the famous online retailer mislabeled this CPU (online product description) as (Socket AM2) when in fact it is a (Socket AM2+).

My MOBO promptly rejected the 5600+.

I'd appreciate any help in choosing a REAL Socket AM2 upgrade CPU as a replacement for the 5600+. I'm going to exchange it. I hope there is an upgrade CPU (available) that doesn't require a new MOBO, etc.

Thanks ct1615...

A couple of notes: The (AMD Athlon 64x2 5600+ 2.9Ghz) is a Socket AMD2+ CPU.
After I installed the 5600+, and AFTER my MoBo freaked, I did extensive research on the AMD site and BURIED DEEP, I mean DEEEEEEP, in their specs pages was a requirement/recommendation for a (Socket AM2+) MoBo.

I needed Indiana Jones’ help to find this on AMD's site:

http://products.amd.com/en-us/RecommendedMBResult.aspx?f1=AMD+Athlon%e2%84%a2+X2&f2=5600%2b&f3=G2&f4=NVIDIA&f5=MCP61&f6=MSI&f7=uATX&f8=65.000&

I was shocked because all of the other specs were perfect for a 4000+ replacement CPU. I’ll try the BIOS upgrade for my MoBo but the most current/last one available for my MoBo is 2008.

The (AMD 64x2 6000+ 3.0Ghz Windsor) runs at (125W) compared to the Brisbane (65W) so I'd have to invest in new fan and perhaps even upgrade my 300W power supply. Which, of course, means that they got me to do the dance.

Perhaps I’m being too stubborn about trying to upgrade on the cheap. But, I had hoped that all the talented and highly experienced users on this site might be able to help me find a workable solution.
