A buddy of mine recently tried playing some new games (VERY cpu intensive), and failed completely because his processor isnt strong enough, he has a Foxconn A6VMX-K motherboard and I'm not well versed enough to say what he could get for a stronger processor, prefer to buy Newegg if possible, thanks in advance guys

Solution
use this bios:
A6VMX-K Add AM3 CPU support. 772F1P16 598KB 6/12/2009

than you can drop in CPUs upto 95W // Phenom II X4 945 @ 3Ghz.
will allow you to game at 720p with medium settings with a decent GPU like 7000 series or 650 gtx

@other: he is trying to update his PC says his desire to update his old PC. obviosly sending heavily on a new i5 PC is not an option/desirable due to what ever reason

The best CPU for him would be an Athlon II X4 640.

Note that it works at 3 GHZ not 4GHZ.
It would be a huge upgrade over the CPU he's using now.

Thank you very much, among my conversation with him in the past 10 mins I think it might be his graphics card, he forgot to mention he only had a Geforce 210 in his computer... but again thank you

Yowch. There's a problem then. The X2 240 is weak, and won't do well with current games, but should be able to play many of them. The GT210 though, is another matter entirely. Depending on the strength of his PSU and his overall budget, that's what he needs to upgrade first. If he's got at least a 250W PSU, A HD7750 would be a good upgrade for him.

Hi!!!!!

If you want to play planetside 2 on medium / high @ 1280 X 1080
you need something like this :

Since your mobo is am2+, it won't cut it. Even if you upgrade cpu and gpu to max, you are throwing your money out the window. If you upgrade, you will play on minimum with bad frame rates anyways in big battles.

If you want a good machine for planet side, you need to change the mobo.
Here are the recommended settings for medium / high settings

GPU : Core i5-661 3.33GHz / Phenom II X4 910
GPU : GeForce GTX 560 / Radeon HD 6870
