Hi,

I have an amd Athlon x4 860k (3.7Ghz base - 4Ghz Boost)

running it with it's stock cooler

The idle temperatures are around 37C

but when i start gaming the CPU reaches 100C

1-is it safe?

2-if not what is the problem? (thermal paste - cooling unit -...etc)

3-what are the safe operating temperatures for this CPU?

Thanks.

Solution
100C is NOT safe. That's 212F, a.k.a. BOILING TEMPERATURE OF WATER. Check to see if all your fans are spinning. If one appears to be abnormally slow, replace it. How recent is the thermal paste? How old is the CPU? The computer should be shutting down at 100C. If it isn't, check your BIOS settings.

the fans are spinning the CPU was installed yesterday with new thermal paste and a new heat sink

the software that i was using to monitor the temperature is "CPUID" that's where i saw it go to 100C

so i restarted the PC immediately and started the BIOS in there the CPU temperature was about 60C

now i don't know which is right

Thanks for the help man.

i was thinking about this idea but unfortunately i don't have one and i don't think that i will be able to get a direct hit on the CPU it self and i don't know if reading the heat sinks temperatures would do it

I've tried MSI Afterburn but i have an AMD CPU so it cant read the CPU temperatures

so do you have any good CPU temperatures monitoring software?

Thanks man

What he said but shutdown temp is 105c

sorry to jump in but have been trying to fingd out my x4 860k runs upto (75c max but usually )69c when gaming and idles around 45c at idle .I have overvolted it by 1.0 and multiplier is at 44 .pls help

If the 860k is anything like the 750k/760k, then max temp should be 74c. You should use AMDOverdrive's Thermal Margins to determine the most accurate at load temps for that CPU. 0c = overheat, negative values are overheating as well. You want the thermal margins to be in the position values above 0c.

Post your thermal margins from AOD.
