AMD CCC 14.12 GPU scaling causes black screen

Greetings,

I've had a major issue since getting an R9 290. I've installed the latest drivers from AMD and applying a 1080p resolution through the CCC doesn't fit my monitor (it's through HDMI btw), so I used the scaling options to fit the picture to my screen. When applied, a couple of minutes later the screen just went black randomly. I thought it was just a glitch, so I restarted and sure enough it did it again at some point. It's completely random, it sometimes does it 5 minutes in or sometimes does it an hour in.

One thing is for certain, if I leave the scaling options at the default settings so it doesn't fit my screen, I don't have any problems. No black screens or anything. Anyone have any ideas?

First off, don't apply resolution through the CCC. It should always be done through windows (right click -> Screen resolution on windows 7). Reset CCC to default to get rid of any changes you made.

In addition, if the resolution isn't fitting your screen, it means that you didn't match it's aspect ratio. You have to choose a resolution that fits your screen's aspect ratio. For you it could be 4-3, 16-9, 16-10, ect.

None of that relates to my original problem, at all. I should be able to select an appropriate res through CCC without any problems. I've set it to 1920x1080 60hz 16:9 which is correct for this monitor, but it isn't stretching to fit the screen.

The scaling options in CCC are what's causing the black screen for me! My monitor is an ASUS VE247H. It doesn't autodetect the resolution or anything, so I have to scale to fit. I really do need help, as it's causing vast problems.

Yeah except both DVI and HDMI connections are causing a black screen crash for me with the latest AMD drivers installed. With older drivers it doesn't black screen as often but it still happens. I'm seriously at a loss as to what's wrong.

It can't be a faulty card. It runs completely fine and error-free when the drivers aren't installed.

But that doesn't explain why it's still happening even on DVI. With a DVI link there aren't any scaling options, it's always full screen. The only connection I haven't tried yet with the latest drivers is VGA, but what's the point in using that with a HD monitor? I should be able to use either HDMI or DVI with full 1080p and have no problems.

I haven't had a black screen for a while with the 13.12 drivers, but the 14.12 drivers are a no-go, I can't go a minute without getting a black screen. Maybe it is my monitor, maybe not. I should probably try another to see if it is.

I have had scaling issues with an older card as well but nothing that couldn't be fixed in the Catalyst control center. If those black screens come back, I would RMA the card (or return it if you still can for a different model). There's no reason you should be running around like a chicken with it's head cut off over an issue that shouldn't exist.

For reference, could I have the make and model of your 290?
