Question AMD costs more than Nvidia

Hello,
I'm from India and the GPU prices are astronomically bad here ever since 2020. So whatever price is applicable in the rest of the world, add approx +30% or more tax to that and that price ends up here. Having said that, I don't understand how a 6950xt costs more than 4070. Like I just can't wrap my head around it how this is possible with all the factors involved.

And this is one of the more standard sites/shops providing for the whole region. We don't have Micro centers or Neweggs here.

They're similarly performing cards and the differences in those prices aren't large. You can't expect relative pricing to be identical from country-to-country as the supply of those cards and the demand will vary significant from country-to-country.

And, in any case, you can get a 4070 for less money here than a 6950XT as well.

Okay, but its a two year old card on older hardware and tech still being more than a current gen card much less from a price callous Nvidia. And the price difference to the next tier AMD from current gen 7900xt is about 23k (my currency). So where is the space for AMD to put their current gen mid-tiers 7700/7800xt when they do come out? I don't understand but I'm disappointed as I was hopeful to buy the 6950xt until I saw the price.

There's one thing that you're not understanding. The RX 6950 XT is a FASTER card than the RTX 4070. The RTX 4070 is about on par with the RX 6800 XT and RTX 3080 when it comes to performance. The RX 6950 XT is faster and has 4GB more VRAM than the RTX 4070.

From a hardware perspective, the RX 6950 XT should be more expensive than the RTX 4070.

Yeah, everyone was jumping on the 6950 because of the 4070 launch. Stock probably running low....makes prices go up. If you plan to game 1440p I would get the 4070 anyway. Better deal when it comes to 1440p due to pretty awesome DLSS features and Frame Generation. Don't buy it if you only play competitive mulitplayer or want to use it for 4k

I wouldn’t say due to low stock. My local microcenter in the USA shows they have about 13 models of 4070 available. 7 models that I can count are above msrp. Even the ones at msrp though appear to be sitting with multiples of the same cards. Some models have 9 in stock, one more than 25 cards. Nvidia may have priced them too high. If they drop the price they may start moving though.

The 6950 XT came out less than 1 year ago (albeit as a refresh of the 6900 XT) and is faster than a 4070, at least when it comes to traditional rasterized rendering. As far as rasterized performance goes, it's closer to being a 4070 Ti competitor. It also has more VRAM than the 4070 and 4070 Ti, which could potentially benefit some usage scenarios.

However, the 4070 does tend to offer better performance with raytraced lighting effects enabled in games that support them, which will likely only become more common over time, along with better implementations of some other features like upscaling and video encoding, and more support in certain non-gaming GPU-accelerated software. The 4070 also draws a lot less power and in turn puts out less heat. So, I would be hesitant to pay more for a 6950 XT than for a 4070. Of course, you should also consider that the 4070 just came out, and we will likely see prices of the 6950 XT adjusted over the coming weeks to account for it.

I do think the current offerings from both AMD and Nvidia are a bit overpriced at the moment though. They seem to still be trying to keep their profit margins up as much as possible following the collapse of the crypto market last year.
