Right now I have a good PC setup, but I'd like to upgrade for my birthday, right now I have:
MOBO: ASUS m59a7 le r2.0
CPU: AMD FX 4170
GPU: R9 270x
So I was thinking of upgrading to a gtx 970 because my MOBO supports it, but what CPU should I get?
I mostly play games like DAYZ SA, Arma3, BF4, and some other steam games.
I need help and I really only have a budget of $180 so what CPU would be a upgrade from the one I have now?

Solution
Your best value is the FX-8320, at just under $140.

I would usually opt for a better cooler as well, like the Arctic Cooling Freezer A11 (a reasonable tower cooler, not too big and easy to mount) for $23:

Many people choose the FX-8350, since it has higher default clocks and can usually be overclocked a little further. Any of the FX-8300 series CPUs would be an excellent upgrade. They perform almost as well as an Intel i5 CPU in games at their stock frequencies, and can be overclocked as well.

These CPUs work well with video cards up to the GeForce GTX 970 and AMD Radeon R9 390.

Good luck!

Since when does a fx 8350 @ stock perform as well in games as an i5? As an i5 650 or what?

Instead of spending money for a gtx 970 and a fx 8350 now, I'd rather wait until you can upgrade your motherboard as well. I don't think your current one supports overclocking fx-8 cores (correct me if I'm wrong) and you really don't want to end up with a cpu bottleneck. Sure, it would be a huge upgrade from what you have now, but wouldn't you want to get the most out of your money?
