When it come's to Intel Core in a nutshell its:
i3: business
i5: gaming
i7: servers

But I know nothing about AMD CPUs, other than they are for people with a budget. Can someone give me a brief summary of the different AMD CPUs?

Well, you're completely wrong.

Intel:
Desktop
i3: low-end web browsing, email, video watching, document creation, with a GPU also suitable for low-end gaming.
i5: mid- to upper range gaming depending on processor, entry-level graphics and video work.
i7: mid-range graphics and video rendering
i7-Extreme: with multiple video cards for high-end gaming, high-end video/graphics rendering
Servers:
Xeon E3: Entry-level, workstations
Xeon E5: mid-range, highe-end workstations
Xeon E7: high-end servers, up to 8 processors of up to 24 cores each on one motherboard. Custom configuration and build.

Mobile:
Celeron
Atom

Actually, as I type I remember more and more models, so I'm just going to quit. :)

AMD:
Consoles
Low- to mid-range gaming
At the high end, obsolete, power-hungry monsters that need expensive motherboards and can't hold a candle to an Intel i7,

Thanks for the info, but what i'm looking for in particular is more off the lines like:
What's the difference between and AMD FD, Anthlon, FX, etc?
And what's the difference between and AMD FX 9370 and a 9590?

AMD FX line is meant for more of as high end gaming as far as AMD and Athlon is low to mid ranged with a4-a10 with weak to strong integrated graphics. FX are good fore video rendering but not great because the memory controller is much slower than Intels offering.

FX cpus must have a dedicated gpu where a4-a10 have integrated gpu and are more suited for office to mid raged productivity work.

quad core athlons 740-860k must have a dedicated gpu and have a decent quad core cpu.

It may help if you would tell us what you want to use your PC for. I have an FX - 8370 that can overclock past the performance levels of the FX 9370 and 9590 with proper water cooling. If you want to do a bit of everything including mid-high end gaming your looking at the minimum FX 8320 and probably the best AMD solution right now FX 8370 (lower W than the 220 W monster FX 9xxx series but can easily overclock to outperform them). However if your looking for something to word process, run internet applications and Skype then all you would need is an Athlon. For mid-range gaming your more looking for FX 6 core FX 6300 type processor with good GPU.

One example with let's say FX 83xx series. FX8300 is base model, subsequent models, 8320, 8350, 8370 are all higher binned (meaning they tested to better super stable frequency) as the last two numbers rise. There are also same models with "E" at the end and that means they can run at lower power requirements at their designated frequency than model without it. That's at their designated frequencies of course and all could be OCed to some degree.

Each core of an AMD processor is worth roughly half of a core on an intel processor.
So a 6 core AMD processor such as FX6300 would be quicker than a dual core i3 running on a 6 threaded task such as video editing, but half as fast as an i3 when doing a single threaded task (most tasks on a computer are single threaded)

Well you can get an AMD 9370 for 200, and a NEW Intel i5 6500 for 200, which I just used for a build and the Intel is going to beat that 8370 in everything. With one exception possibly being applications needed more than 4 threads and even then the i5 may just be faster, stronger, cooler, and a better buy. I love AMD, and I really wish they could compete with Intel in the desktop market but they just can't. I had an 8350 before the 4770k I have now and I can't even compare the two, the i7 excels in every category. The day AMD can compete in the desktop cpu market I will try them again. Sadly though, right now AMD cpus for DESKTOP (they're mobile stuff is GREAT) are not competitive.

Oh there is this incredibly useful chart: Tom's CPU Heirarchy

Well as most AMD fans waiting for the Zens arrival. There's a rumor going about that Microsoft and Samsung interested in AMD.I can go with Samsung...Not so much Microsoft as they just fails in general.Look at windows 10...A glorified windows 8....Altho This may also not be a bad idea or route for AMD to take.Imagine AMD with this same Money as Intel...At the moment Intel i think got 80% market share

If Amd can bring that margin down to 60% or even 50%...The competition would be so much greater also the new cpu's etc coming out of both would be much more rewarding as for me i don't really like 1 sided dominance...Look at pro gaming....The top teams are so damn boring to watch. No creativity. Then look at the weaker teams and there strategies etc...It's so much rewarding :)
