AMD crossfire r9 280 and 290 not x

can crossfire work between a r9 280 and a r9 290 not x both asus cards?

No this will not work. They have different GPU cores completely. 280 series work with each other and the older 7900 series, so you can have r9 280/280x/7970/7950 combined in multiple card configurations. The r9 290 only crossfires with another r9 290 series card like the r9 290x.
