AMD executive blasts Intel's wireless technology

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- An executive of chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. took a shot at rival Intel's Centrino technology, calling the wireless component of Intel's offering "garbage" and suggesting the company misleads the market.

Kevin Knox, director of worldwide enterprise business development for AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., made the remarks during a keynote at the Enterprise IT Week conference held in Las Vegas, which is happens at the same time as Comdex.

"They have put $300 million into marketing, and have convinced you of a lot of things that aren't true," Knox said.

"It's not a processor," he said, noting that Centrino is Intel's bundle of a chipset, mobile processor and wireless technology bundled in a single solution.

"The chip is good," Knox said. "The wireless technology they bundle with the chip is garbage. But if you want Centrino, you've got to take that technology."

Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., unveiled its Centrino offering earlier this year, and has been pushing the wireless, mobile technology throughout the marketplace, in part with a $300 million-plus marketing effort as well as aggressive channel programs.

Intel executives have said the technology is being quickly adopted. During Intel's most recent quarter, executives said the company, overall, had a record quarter of both unit shipments and revenue in the North American channel. Centrino, they said, was adopted quickly and was a significant part of the quarter's performance.

An Intel spokeswoman, responding to Knox' remarks, said, "the adoption rate speaks for itself."

Knox' keynote only briefly discussed the wireless technology. He spent most of his address discussing the increasing costs of technology transitions and disruptions in corporate Information Technology departments -- costs AMD says it can help eliminate with its Opteron and Athlon 64 processors. Those chips run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications with high levels of performance -- allowing IT departments and solution providers to develop or install 32-bit software first, and then upgrade to 64-bit software without upgrading the processor platform.

Intel's 64-bit processor, Itanium 2, cannot run 32-bit applications optimally and its Xeon server processors cannot run 64-bit applications.

Knox likened transitioning to AMD processors as easy as moving from CD to DVD -- where DVD is backward-compatible to CDs. He likened transitions on other technologies to the move from 8-track tapes to cassette tapes, where the hardware had to change as well. Knox said many companies have refused to work to remove transition and disruption costs in the technology space, adding unnecessary costs to IT budgets.

"I'm as guilty as anybody," Knox said. "I've not made it easy for everybody -- up until recently."

Opteron processors were launched in April, while AMD's Athlon 64 processors for desktops first began shipping in September.

Well, just ordered a Dell Inspiron 500m (Centrino chipset) laptop last week. I'll let you know how much the wireless sucks when it arrives.

I think AMD is jealous cuase Intel tapped into a very lucrative market that AMD has no answer to. I believe that Centrino is only b/a or something like that? I know it's not top of the line, but by no means is it crap. Intel has always had a habit of (I'm thinking of motherboards here) coming out with chipsets that lacked the newest and greatest, but was rock stable. Besides, wouldn't take much to upgrade Centrino.

I'm not sure what the gripe is. You're *guaranteed* wireless functionality with the "Centrino" brand. I mean, before this, laptop manufacturers use to offer base models without any wifi functionality. Now, they're all offering it, even the most "base" model. That's what Intel wanted, wireless in everything. It's not the latest and greatest, but nobody's stopping you from sticking in an 802.11a/g card just like you would've done with a non-Centrino notebook anyway.

The pentium-M CPU is a really good chip. No one says that it's crap. But the wireless components are pretty basic. I don't like the fact that they made a new name for something that is now pretty standard. That would be like puting a 'supremo' technology(R) label on all laptops with a DVD-R. And then making really really really dumb commercials full of banal, annoying slogans.

That's the whole plan. They want to sell their wireless chip + mobile chipset as well. They know that other alternatives are out there, perhaps even better ones. They're taking them right out of the competition by advertising centrino instead of pentium-m. In order for a laptop to be centrino-certified, it has to have a pentium-m, the chipset, and the intel wireless as well.

The result is this:

Say I start up a notebook company. The pentium-m is a great chip, so I start making notebooks with it. Now, I can either put in my own 802.11g wireless and my superior chipset, or I can use intel's stuff. If I use my own, I can sell the laptop just fine, but I have to do all my own advertising. If I use intel's stuff, I just slap a centrino sticker on it and the thing sells itself.

Centrino isn't really all that great. The pentium-m sells centrino, and centrino sells the intel wireless + chipset.

I'd love a pentium-m 1.9 GHz + 512 MB DDR + 15.0" UXGA + mobility radeon 9600 + dvd/cdrw + 802.11g... mmm.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

that's funny,

I work for one of the top 3 companies in wireless networking products and we get a lot of idiots call us and ask "I've a Dell so and so laptop. Do u know that it has latest centrino technology... are u familiar with it? have u heard abt it? did u c it b4? and keep bugging with all the damn stupid questions as if Intel and Dell got some alien technology and no one else on the earth knows abt it.

In my opinion, those buying products from Dell got to be either totally and hopelesly stupid or want to tear the computer apart and sell the components individually and make some money out of it.

Ok!

I wouldn't mind telling you .....but these guys don't want their customers to know that they outsourced this damn tech support to India...

Hmmm, this seems to be walking a fine line on being an antitrust breaking tactic to me.

I think Chandana knows what he is talking about after all he is East Indian and had to actually go to school in order to earn a work visa in order to work in the USA or Canada ;)
He also has to go back to India now because all the high speed networking repair, release and upkeep is now in INDIA.
To bad he did all that puddle jumping he could have stayed in India got drunk in College then taken a Network Engineering course in how to stay awake on the evening shift.

Ya I have to agree with Hardware Boss they don't sell Centrino all over the world and then have 3rd world countries like India have most of the tech support over there because the Network Engineer in India only makes 25 Grand a year and over here the same guy makes 50 Thousand +
Explain how Centrino is not making money for INTEL.........

It's not that Centrino doesn't work for wireless networking it's just that it only works if India says it does ;..;

The AMD guy is only pissed because Intel has a cheap labour force overseas and AMD doesn't....Well in the long run the guys making more Money in the USA will make a better AMD product then Intel. OH wait they just did oops sorry I forgot about that AMD 64 for a ns.

Why's that so funny?

I'd probably go for the centrino as you can run them for 5+ hrs instead of 90 minutes.

Besides, I usually find centrino 1.5 for the same price as p4-m 2.4

Sounds like a bitter AMD executive grasping at straws simply because they don’t have anything to offer the segment, their slow sales, debt, and the lack of availability on their flagship products.

I would take what this man says with a grain of salt he’s more proof AMD is a poorly managed company.
