can i use any am3+ motherboard or an am3+ 990x for the amd fx-4100?

Go to the 990x webpage under "cpu support" and see if a bios update might be required. Some newer boards will post without a bios flash; some may require it.

Theortically any as long as its supported by the bios. Check the individual board to make sure there is a bios available that will support it. You will most likely have to upgrade the bios regardless of the Board, until board start shipping with the bios already installed.
