AMD FX-6300 Issues

I have had an issue with fps drops when playing any game for the last 3-5 months now. My current rig is as follows:

CPU: AMD FX 6300 Vishera
RAM: 8GB Vengance Ram
GPU: Nvidia 660 GTX
Mobo: MSI 760 GM P-23FX
OS: Win7 Pro 64bit

I usually only have fps drops for about 10-15 seconds, until about another 5 minutes passes and then it happens again. My FPS before this issue was a constant 200 fps in CS:GO, but now when it drops it dips to about 50 fps. Some days it happens frequently, other days not as much.

I use EVGA precision to monitor my gpu activity, and whenever i get these fps drops my gpu usage drops to about 8-9%. At the same time this is happening, my cpu temperature sky rockets, to the point where CoreTemp gives me readings of 245 degrees celcius (which can't be possible, b/c my pc would either shut down or catch fire lol.) During these fps drops and lag spikes, my cpu usage does not seem to increase out of the ordinary.


I just need some ways to try and figure out what the issue is here, is it my GFx card, CPU, or is it my mobo? Or possibly something else?

That sounds like temperature throttling for sure. It's the other way around, when temperature raises usage and speed drop. Try using AOD for most accurate readings, those other programs are heavily favoring Intel and are of not much use on AMD systems. Other tings to look for are voltages.

What do you think the cause is? Is it a motherboard issue? I'm looking to buy some new parts just trying to be sure of what I need.

Also, what do I look for when checking voltages? I use cpuID / HWmonitor to check, just don't really know what I'm looking at.

Yes, I think that MB is making some troubles, it's really marginal for that CPU. To speak not about OC, bad and bare VRM section, power stability is low.
In SpeedFan, look for Vcore1 and +12v but got to catch them when they do crazy things and under load. In HW Monitor, CPU VCORE and CPU, they should also be steady
AOD: http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/technologies-gaming/over-drive is probably most acurate for AMD platform.

I downloaded AOD, and when my fps drops with my GPU drop, my thermal margin drops to -185 degrees Celsius. When it's idle its in between 45-30 degrees Celsius thermal margin.

Also, my cpu multiplier is at 17.0x, I've tried lowering it to no effect. The fps and gpu usage drops continue to happen.

Something i forgot to mention in my pc specs is my PSU, it is a 650W cooler master.

Here is a screen shot of my voltages using HWmonitor, this was taken as soon as my gpu usage/fps drop started in game.

I can see my voltages drop dramatically at the vcore spot. Does this mean a new motherboard would solve this problem?

Also known as voltage droop. Could be caused by MB or PSU. At 650W it's not overloading and those wild temperature swings can indicate problem with MB rather than PSU or CPU.
here is a chip, probably IT8720F, that reads temperatures and voltages, if wrong BIOS would react and make bad decisions altering other parameters.
There should be settings for LLC (Line Load Calibration) in BIOS, maybe you can change it to Normal to lover voltage fluctuations.

I have AMI BiOS, (American Megatrends Inc.) and I do not see an option for LLC anywhere in the BiOS. But I just wanted to say thank you for your help CountMike, definitely helped me narrow down the issue.

Maybe you could just set CPU/VID voltage manually ?

What should the voltage values be?

EDIT: Actually lowered the cpu voltage to 1.2 instead of 1.25... and no more fps drops. Thank you so much for your help.

Those automatic settings don't get it always right, It's best to set manually.
