[SOLVED] AMD FX-6300 not going above 80% when playing games.

So I recently got an RX 580 4gb and wanted to see how much the fx 6300 bottlenecks so I downloaded afterburner. After playing some games I noticed that the CPU usage stays below 80% and the games that I would play would run poorly. For example dirt rally had avg 55 fps after the doing the benchmark. Changing the graphic presets wouldn't do much, because there would still be times when it would drop below 60fps and stay there for some time.

I was wondering: Is it normal for a CPU to stay below 80% when playing games? The cpu temps when playing dirt rally are below 60c so I don't think that there are any overheating issues. When I had a game open and I was browsing chrome for example, the usage would sometimes spike to 100% but not when playing games.

Solution
I see this issue all the time across many different games with FX CPU's. Not totally sure of why this is, my guess is that modern games such as dirt rally just have no idea how to fully utilize an FX cpu so GPU usage and CPU usage stay below 100%.

My previous CPU was an FX 6350 paired with a gtx 1060, in fallout 4 the CPU would barely crack 50% usage on any core and the 1060 wouldn't go above about 80% usage even with vsync off.

that CPU is going to slow you down on the faster GPUs for sure.. not sure though how much.. but the FX-6300 is pretty old for the newer generation GPUs. I would not worry too much if you feel its good enough. It also can depend on how much ram you have too as for example if you are maxing out your ram it may also slow your FPS in games as it has to wait..

I agree with Dunlop and Dr. Rob. I have an FX 8320 in my backup PC and it never reaches 100% usage in games regardless of the video cards I tested with it. At 1080 resolution, trying low and high settings in several games I've tried:

HD 7970
HD 7970's in crossfire
R9 390x
RX 580
GTX 1060

It's time to let go of the FX setup and upgrade your CPU, mobo and memory. Sell the FX setup to recoup some of your money.
