I recently built my machine and used the FX-6300 for the cpu. However I just installed the stock heatsink that came with the 6300. Now my problem is that I have friends coming and don't want my computer to sound like a small airplane. Could I run my machine without a heatsink if I just did light downloading and movie watching?

Solution
Nope, most likely the PC is setup not to boot up if there is no CPU Fan/Cooler installed. Although you probably could bypass that in the BIOS. Running the PC without a cooler for the sake of not embarrassing yourself due to the noise will end up with a fried CPU and minus ~$100.

A temporary solution would be to makeshift attach a larger fan like a 80/90-120mm fan to the stock heatsink so that the cooler would be quieter but the end goal is to get an aftermarket cooler for your CPU.

.:edit:.

I also wonder why your PC is so loud if you're going to only download files and watch videos.

I would advise not using a CPU without a heatsink. It will overheat guaranteed. If you do not like the noise, you can always buy an aftermarket cooler. Arctic Freezers and Cooler master hypers are good choices.
