Hello all,
I bought FX 8320 CPU, along with ASUS M5A97 EVO r2.0 motherboard, started CS:GO and there i discovered the fan was really loud so that indicated high temperatures. Max temp while playing CS:GO was 54c which i guess is not good.

Then i started prime95 and ran the temperature test for 12 minutes and CPU temps went up to 68c. What do you think of this? I've read somewhere that it may get lower because thermal paste wasn't settled in, as i installed cpu before 1-2h from now.

I am using stock cooler i got with CPU. Thermal paste is the one that was already on the cooler. My other components:
GPU: ATI 7770,
RAM : 8gb

Is this alarming? I know you guys would suggest getting a better cooler but i just can't get it, why can't i use stock one for some normal temperatures without no OC-ing.

Thanks in advance!

54C is fine for that CPU while in-game. The CPU should have an active temp around 60C and an idle temp around 40C. I have an 8350 CPU and have an h110 water cooler. If I run a synthetic benchmark it will overheat every time, getting up to 93C. During real world scenarios I've never had mine go above 80C.

Synthetic scenarios are GREAT for stress testing your PC, and showing their limits, however, for real world usage, your mileage may vary. If you have a synthetic benchmark run for 25 minutes with no issues, odds are you will never have an issue with any real world operations unless there is a problem with the RAM.

Well i am atm playing CS:GO and the temps are slowly going up and up. Now at 61c, and CS:GO is not a game that has some high requirements. I'm a bit worried :)

@coovargo Your temps are insanely high especially for a water cooled CPU - you should not allow it go higher than 62 C. If you are getting 80 C at real life usage you should take a look at your cooler installation.

@nele92 Your temps are normal for a stock cooler. You can invest in some aftermarket cooler which should keep things quieter and cooler. Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is a popular inexpensive cooler.

http://i59.tinypic.com/1ewewm.jpg here you can see my temperatures after 12 minutes prime95 stress test.
The cpu temp went up to 63 in CS:GO. In dota up to 61c. Sorry for being boring, but i just bought this CPU and if it is overheating on mild games, what would happen on something like battlefield 4 or so.

Hey,

these type of stress tests unnecessarily stress out your components. I wouldn't recommend using one if you are not looking into some overclocking for example and want to make sure your system is stable. You are over thinking it. Enjoy your upgrade and don't go digging into these type of tests.

While in games if it stays at about 62-65 you are fine. Stock cooler isn't the best but it will get the job done.

Ok, thanks for the answers. Also, i have read that in HW monitor i should watch at 'package' under my CPU and not 'CPU' under motherboard tree. I didn't write this clearly i know 😛 If ou understand, is any of this correct?

Sorry. If i run it stock its 28c idle and 35c on load. I had a 5ghz overclock on it but it was in the 80cs in real world gaming which the temps did bother me. Ive since trimmed it back to 4.72 ghz and have had temps between 33c idle and 69c max real world usage. Synthetics still run me about 82c. Should have said that I had an overclock. My bad. Will have to remember that next time I mention.

If you want to know the real cpu temps download AMD's AMD Overdrive and look for your "Thermal Margin". Those utilities aren't accurate in many instances.

Ok, i will try when i get home. Thanks a lot. Will update if needed

I just installed AMD Overdrive, played CS:GO for half an hour, and my Thermal margin was around 23 c but it went even to 18 c. On some point it started buzzing so hard, and the computer case was all hot which got me worried and i turned the game off. Now i am really worried :)

18C is fine. What was "buzzing"? Were your fans just ramping up to high speed? That is 100% normal. You have to remember that if your pc is working fine, no bsod's, freezes, lock ups, reboots then you don't have an issue. I run my 8320 at 4.5 Ghz with Prime95 running, tons of apps running, three web browsers, tabs galore open, itunes, VLC, YouTube etc... concurrently. The thing is exhausting hot air out of my C70 like crazy. I never get one hiccup and its been like this for three years.

Thanks for the reply. After all of my thinking/overthinking about my situation, now i suspect that the heat in the case and all the loudness isn't actually produced by the processor, but the PSU(which i used with my old i3 2100 and it wasn't loud/hot). Now i need to find a way what is making that noise., i tried to wait for the computer to cool down at idle and then in amd overdrive bump cpu fan speed to 100% in order to hear if that is the noise the computer is producing during load, but fan control didn't work :)
