AMD FX-8320 overheats

It sits at 38-45°C when idle, and when i'm playing a game or doing a stress test, it goes up to the point of shutting down, this happens since yesterday.
I'm using a stock cooler with stock settings.

My motherboard (ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0) and my Vcard (ATI HD7850) don't seem to have any problems.
I tried cleaning out the dust and resetting the BIOS.

You may want to check/replace the thermal paste on the cooler, and I strongly recommend replacing the cooler with something like the 212 EVO.

Change current case to full tower Case for better airflow.Add Side Case Fan which is in front of CPU.That will help a bit.Also Add After Market CPU Cooler.

I have heard of this before with the FX series CPUs especially the FX 8300 and FX9000 series. Off the top of my head the a high quality Motherboard is needed for these processors. I am sure yours is fine since you have not overclocked. But the 990FX chipset is recommended for the FX 8300 and 9000 processors.I have heard of FX 8350 overheating and burning the motherboard like older Pentium Prescotts would. Not like on fire but changing the colour to darker shade of brown/black at the back of the MB. Also the stock cooler should be ok but your still not going ok get the better temps as an aftermarket cooler would. If I hear or see anything more I will update this. Also what are your voltages set at?

The 970 chipsets can support the FX-8xxx series processors. The 9xxx are simply power hungry and, plain wasteful.

How can i check if I have to replace the thermal paste? This build is 7 months old. And i'm aware that stock coolers won't keep my cpu cool but it shouldn't get to the point of overheating

By checking the paste, I meant checking how old it is, and replacing it. People recommend every 6 months, which is a good idea.

But why are you running Prime95? did you Overclock your CPU ? if not then do not run prime95.This will using CPU @ very high that causing to increase temperature.

CPU Z can tell you what your current voltage is so it changes frequently but it shuld not go over the stock voltage. Though it does not tell you what it is set at in the BIOS. Your MB should have a UEFI BIOS so it is easier to navigate your way around and look for the core voltage. You don't have do this now but maybe the next time you turn your PC on press Del or F2 or whatever key when you see the ASUS logo right after you power on. I only suggest this because CPUs can be random with temps even for two of the same processor.

A 990FX motherboard is required to resolve this problem.

The FX-8320/FX-8350 should be rated as 140W parts, but AMD has not done so.

I'll try to buy and replace it today, but do you think it's the cause for such temps?

The best workaround (I won't call it a solution) is to get an aftermarket heat sink.

I know it sounds ridiculous to use an aftermarket heat sink with a processor running at stock, but in this case, that will really help.

Replacing the thermal paste and cleaning with a can of compressed air solved the problem! Thanks

Good to hear, the stock heatsink can only cool so well, any dust overwhelms it.

I don't mean you should go and but the best MB you can find. It is just personal preference. Some vendors have had issues with FX 8 core processors with the AMD 970 chipset but I don't think Asus was on that list the other good names were.
