Hi,

Recently I tried to overclock my AMD FX-8350

These are the specs
Windows 7 and Windows 10
Motherboard Gigabyte 990x gaming
24 GB Ram
Asus GTX 1070

Now, I can follow all the settings, the problem I have is with the voltage. Here's why. On some YT videos I saw people could manualy adjust the voltage by typing. So for example 1.4557v But for me it changes back to auto when I enter a value, however it does change if I hit the spacebar. The wierd thing is for me it's indicated with +0...... So what is equal to 1.4 volts then?

Also I tried Gigaybyte Easytune is that a good option?

And maybe I am doing things wrong hahaha! I am new to this so any help regarding overclocking would be usefull!

Thanks for the help!

Solution
a boost would be significant in changing the system to Intel

you can try overclocking everything as long it runs stable, no risk there if you won´t raise the voltage to heaven

Yes it's up to date. There is 1 newer version from December. I rather not q-flash the bois since I'm afraid it wll stop working. And numlock? No I don't think it's enabled since I am able to change the other settings by typing.

The problem is that wenever I enter a value, when I press enter it wel return itself to auto. However by pressing spacebar I am able to cycle between values that start with 0+ or 0-. Now since I want to add voltage what value should I enter? I am currently running with +0025V

Here's a pcture of the voltage setting:

I also did a prime95 test for 20+ minutes and the highest the temp ever got was 81.6 the rest was all in the high seventies.
Currently I am running a 4.3 GHZ Overclock.

Hopefully this helps a bit, thanks for the support!

Does OC actaully help with gaming? What is the max OC you think I could get on the (Cooler Master Hyper 412S)?

depends on the games, if these are cpu or graphics card demanding. OC can help but not always.

Each CPU (chip) is different, you can try and error with a new cooler till it´s stable at most. But if you are getting about 200MHz more, you won´t get a significant boost in performance.

At which point would I see a significant boost in performance? And is it safe and usefull to overclock ram on this motherboard? Say to 2133 MHZ?

Thanks for the help and patience!

Ok, so I can just boost the ram clock speed and test wthout much risks? I would hate if I would burn my Ram haha! And uh, I am going to try to run the FX-8350 at 4.4/4.5 GHZ.

And yes, my next build will be Intel based. Heard the proccesors are a lot faster. Especially single-core perfrmance. Unfortunately, I learned all this after I bought my new rig.

Hopefully Zen turns out to be good, otherwise it's gonna be Intel next...

Thanks for the warm welcome here! If I ever need something again I'll definitely ask!

I used to have your exact chip... You should be able to hit 4.4/4.5 with ease... Now, the bad news is that it will not translate into games as well because the FX line is just not super good... Yes, they are cheap by comparison, but unfortunately you get what you pay for in this case... Don't get me, I was an AMD guy through and through, but I was really disappointing with the performance on the FX chips...

I built an intel system recently and it runs great... Like you, I'm really excited by the Ryzen chip, but AMD has been long on hype lately and short on performance so I'm waiting till I see some good data on the Ryzen performance. I do think that part of the FX's problem was the lack of hyper threading so the face the Ryzen has hyper-threading is a positive... :)

Some mobos are like that, the msi gaming 970 is the same. +0.000 will do the stock 1.4. +.010000 will give me 1.41 and so forth also you made need more voltage because the lowered fx cpus 83xx are binned at this point and don't get crazy ocs on little voltage like they use to. Also the fx have lack luster single core performance which is what games require. You will see some results but not much. Some i3 intel cpus outperform the fx 8350 in games. Amd is not the best for gaming, better for rendering and streaming. Intel has strong single core which is why the dumpster amd in gaming. Wait for ryzen its looking okay so far
