AMD FX-8350 w/Stock Cooler

Hi,

I will soon be building my first computer and will be using an AMD FX-8350 as the processor. Since I am on a tight budget, I am not able to get a 3rd party cooler at the moment and I am wondering what clock speed I could safely get or if I could just keep it at 4.0GHz.

Yuk, spend the extra $20 and put a better cooler on it. The stock cooler will not work on that chip, it runs way to hot.

I advise you to keep it at the stock speed. While the stock cooler tends to be noisy it does a good job of keeping the processor cool at stock speeds and doesn't handle the additional heat from added voltage well.

What about just a small overclock like 4.1 or 4.2? Would that still get the temperature up too high? What is a same operating temperature for those CPU's?

You will not overclock on the stock cooler.

It will most likely throttle itself down due to heat. Mine was running near 65 on a noctua DH N12, with two 120MM Fans.
That chip is way to hot for the stock cooler. That's not even an option.

you will be fine at stock clocks, the reference HSF is designed for that TDP. There will no problems. When you can afford a non-reference cooler, get 212 evo. It is a great budget cooler.

I barely got 4.4 before it ran to hot.

Now that's dependent on several factors, a good chip, mobo and of course cooling.

You can expect anything between 4ghz+ and 5ghz, for example memeber SR-71 Blackbird has his 8350 at 5.1 ghz.\1.384 volts

I run it on an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, not a cheap board.

Won't get anywhere near 5.0 with anything but a H110i. It hits 70c in Prime95 with a modest voltage change on an H100 with 4 120MM, in push pull in a Coolermaster HAF 932.

This chip is hot.

Just two last questions though... What is a normal temperature under full load for that CPU? Also, is the difference between 4GHz and ~4.4-5.0GHz noticeable?

These chips under gaming load is significantly cooler than full load.

Most games only use 4 of the 8 cores, so expect in the range of 40 - 50 C.

At full load, from Prime95, you could see between 60-70 easily, but you won't encounter a situation like this in nomal desktop usage.

Now given how these are very much voltage driven OP will need a decent cooler. I gave reference to good budget cooler which will do a decent job that will be far superior to the reference HSF. I stand by my answer. Even at stock speeds, expect throttling. That chip is too hot for the stock cooler.

Even if that was so, the significant part of post was i'm not able to get a third party cooler at the moment (for whatever reason). Op will be jim dandy fine until he/or she can.

I don't think he will. I'm reading a lot of other posts who's motherboards were shutting down and locking up from heat on the stock cooler.

Just monitor your temperatures. Don't let it run in the 60's for too long.

With a little luck , a great chip , a great board with a good thermal and power design , a lot of tweaking and a high end Air or Water cooling solution good things are possible.
