So thats it, an fx 8350 will bottleneck a gtx 1080? How much? I know fx 8350 is getting obsolete, but can handle the all mighty gtx 1080??

Please help, moving from 290x to an gtx 1080

(Its for an friend, sorry)

A few good point made above. The term bottlenecking is and has been thrown around religiously now for a while. Though, to a degree the FX 8350 will bottleneck that GPU here and there think about this -- *most* all of us have that scenario to some degree anyway so don't worry about it you get the GPU for the overall benefits it will give you and you could always upgrade later if you wanted to. Get the GPU enjoy it and don't look back for a while the FX 8350 is still a good processor overall. One can always change other parts later on down the line. See how the GPU performs with the FX 8350.

I said this to him, but still he wants to keep the 8350, the generic rams and put an 1080 to this, so idk how to explain him about the bottleneck, and he said me he will move to an fx 9590,dont want to change from AMD and its shitty 8 weak cores :|

FX 9xxx CPUs are a disaster. Tell your friend to just keep his CPU, and then if he has problems, he can upgrade then. I guess the only way he will believe a bottleneck exists in certain games is if he experiences it.

I have a 8350 and r290x they are already a good match. is he really having game issues as I don't have issues with it.

and very likely he doesn't have a motherboard that can support fx9xxx as most people don't buy a board compatiable with it unless they are actually got the 9xxx

Not really, even with a 290X there are plenty of games where the CPU is holding the GPU back!

Definitely upgrade to i5 6600 minimum

He wants to play Ark survival in 1080p 60 fps and epic graphics, but with the 8350/r9 290x he obtains only 25-26 or even low fps, so he wants to buy an all mighty gtx 1080, cuz he read some benchmarks, and he said, ark is an only gpu intensive, so he thinks an 1080 can pass 60+ fps even with that old cpu :/ and i advice him about the bottleneck, but no matter i said it to him, still want to do it, thinking just upgrading to an gtx 1080 will give him 60 fps

Show him all the reviews, pretty much all of them will show that the game is NOT graphics limited, rather CPU limited due to piss poor development

At that point just say "ok, do what you want" and point him to your past suggestions when he complains that his FPS scores are nowhere near the reviews. You can't bend a brick wall, just wait until the pressure crumbles it.

Not by much. But that depends on the game. Here is a vid comparing a few intel CPUs and the 8350 at STOCK SPEEDS with the Titan X. As you'll see, the 8350 at stock handles the Titan X just fine, and seeing as the 1070 & 1080 are the new Titan X, they'll handle it fine. Again, it will bottleneck in some games, but not by very much.

Ark is horribly optimized and still in beta (Alpha?) so, your friend is an idiot.

Unless you want to squeeze out the most FPS possible from the GTX 1080, an i7 6700K @ 5.0 GHz will be favourable.
An i7 6700K Stock will reduce your FPS a little only.
Dont get 6600K, its 4 cores can bottleneck your frame rate for it has only 4 threads, netting you 10% less FPS on games like GTA V. Oh and the FX 8350 will reduce your FPS by 25% for its weak single threaded performance.

What BS^ and some comments above^
What would you consider a bottleneck? Not getting maximum FPS compared to a better CPU or overclocked CPU with that GTX 1080? In that case overclocking will get you there.
The difference in frame rate between i5 6600K can FX 8350 is between 5-10 FPS for 60-120 FPS range and 25-50 FPS for 120+ FPS range. You people portray "bottleneck" as if the FX 8350 will clog the GTX 1080 till it only gives like 30 FPS on Medium settings. Please its not that serious.

For all Intents gaming at 60-120 FPS on a 60Hz or 75Hz screen is okay for your GTX 1080 and FX 8350. Only if you have 120Hz screen then you have to go Intel for significantly better performance. (Exception: Minecraft, CS GO).

-Get your GTX 1080 and be happy, dont be angry over it. That will be my definition of bottleneck.

I run ark on 1080p ultra everything with a gtx1080 and an unparked overclocked fx8370 to 4.33ghz i gained around 20fps doing that but im thinking its still bottlenecking so i will see how the zen does when it debuts. I get average 38-85 frames on ultra average is 55-60
