Guys,

Newegg are offering a 8370 and a mobo for $140. I currently have a i7-920. I was thinking of looking at this as a upgrade that will give me some improvements and will probably last for a couple of years. What do you guys think? Should I go for it?

Thanks,

Jim.

That's very true, but there are a couple of points that are making me think about it:

1) The mobo I have now is the Asus P6-TD Deluxe which is great mobo but the sata ports are the very first sata ports and I wonder if they will throttling my SSDs at all?

2) The price. At $140 I'm not worried about it being dead end. I just want it to keep me going for a couple of years. I'm worried that if I do nothing the i7 I have will really start to show it's age.

Here is the link to the bundle and details, including the mobo, which I'm a little dubious about:

I just went through the reviews for it. It sounds like the board likes to over heat / catch fire, so based on that and feedback from the others above I'm going to give it a miss.

Thanks guys,

Jim.

A pentium g even if its 2c4t its a serious downgrade from an i7 920.

A G4560 + b250 motherboard + 8gb ddr4 memory is $200 USD.
In most tasks this will be noticably better then any fx series CPU. Only place the fx 83xx is better is in things that can use all 8 "cores".
But with this setup you have a very nice upgrade path for future vs being maxed out in a dead platform from 2012.

In tasks that can use all 8 threads of the i7 yes, in everything else no. The many years of improvements to architecture and IPC make its individual cores significantly faster. Either way it is still a smarter path to take then buying into AM3 in 2017

I7-920 has a passmark rating of 4967 and a single thread rating of 1164.
G4620 has a rating of 5404 but a much stronger single thread rating of 2148.

The nice thing is, that a lga1151 motherboard can support kaby lake upgrades as good as a I7-7700K

As to ssd performance, modern motherboards support sata 6 speeds which can be 2x the sequential performance of sata 3.
In practice you will not notice much since the benefit of a ssd is in low latency and not so much the sequential performance.

It's not a downgrade at all, It's an upgrade. Especially with DDR4 memory speeds.

Wow, i have the i7 960, currently @ 3.9ghz ( 4.2 in winter ). I get 6700 on passmark. This things rocks, but it have 6year of usage. I was looking for a mid upgrade to the FX-83xx series. It seems that it isen't that good. I will wait until ryzen 7 1700 get cheaper. Thanks everyone!

Since I posted this I've been looking long and hard at the Ryzen 1600X. Micro Center do a good bundle of motherboard and the 1600X for just under $300
