Hi all,

Thanks for taking the time to stop by my post. Hopefully I can get some info to help me move forward.

I have built a handful of computers from when I was 12 years old during the AGP 8x days (ATI 9700 anyone?) and recently built a budget rig to mess around on primarily CS:GO and COD. I am tech savvy, so don't be too afraid to speak the language.

Buying new parts (Ryzen, Intel, mobo etc.) is NOT an option right now. This is what I have to work with.

Specs:

AMD FX-8320 @ 4.4Ghz
Asus GTX 1050Ti 4GB ROG Strix edition OC'd slightly
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Rev. 4.0 (BIOS version F3 - latest)
Corsair RX750M PSU (750w)
16GB (4x 4gb) G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 2400Mhz RAM (Only can get it to 1600Mhz, that's a seperate issue.)
Corsair H90 AIO water cooler in push/pull config on top of case (140mm fans)
Samsung EVO 850 SSD (Windows 10 64bit)

I'm running my 8320 on a 4.4Ghz OC with all of the power saving and turbo boost settings turned to OFF in BIOS. Also note my case is fairly large with 2x 140mm intakes, 140mm push/pull rad on top of case, 120mm exhaust also on top and a 140mm in the back. All fans are usually running at 75-90% speed because I am anal about temps and my headphones allow me to totally block out ambient noise.

Now, I've heard the 9590 has some stability issues but I am noticing that it seems like the people who are having these issues either don't have the correct parts to support the chip and/or don't have their BIOS configured properly.

I have a few questions:

1) Before I install the 9590, should I reset my BIOS settings prior to taking out the 8320?
2) What BIOS settings are a "must" for this processor? (besides the obvious power saving ones)
3) Should I be re-installing any type of software including Windows 10? (hope not)
4) Would you recommend having an extra fan pointed at the VRM heatsink JUST to be on the safe(r) side?
5) Will one 8 -pin CPU plug be sufficient for the 220w TDP? (AMD and Gigabyte's site say yes, just like to maybe hear it from someone who has had personal experience)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated and sorry for the long post, I am just very anal about my machines (OCD and ADD, what can I say) and I do not want anything to go wrong.

* Please do not start an Intel vs. AMD war on this page. I got most of these parts from a friend for less than 100 bucks so I can not really complain :)

Solution
I wouldn't bother. The 9xxx isn't any different than the chip you already have. It's just been OC'd to the max. If you have already OC'd your chip to to 4.4GHz all cores you basically already have an 9590. Rather your chip is the same but 300MHz slower. This isn't really a difference. Us mods here have seen people try to get that 9xxx CPU working and even with good parts it's just a dog of a chip. Save your money. It's not worth it.

Hi thank you for the reply! I understand it's only 300Mhz slower right now, but I am hoping to get the 9590 running at 5Ghz (would be an absolute miracle, I have seen people achieve this). One of the reasons I am actually getting this chip (ordered off Newegg already for $120) is because a buddy of mine needs a computer built to use for only streaming Netflix/YouTube to his 40 inch tv and wanted to also have a smaller monitor under it as well. He is going to be buying the 8320 off of me and I will be installing it for him. He's paying me a nice amount to do so, so I am really not going to be paying anything for the 9590. Yes, I can put my money elsewhere but that is not the point of this whole thing anyway :)

Appreciate your input!

tell me you haven't bought the 9590 yet.

newegg, that is easy return then. How much will he pay you? I guess 60-80 bucks.

Get this combo and it will serve you much better than fx 9590.

Performance comparison ryzen 1300X vs FX-8370: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu-Hpec42X4

1200 can easily oc to 1300X or better, FX 9590 is slightly better than 8370. Don't waste money on 8370 anymore, waste of money.

Yeah, I did. And I am determined to get it clocked as close to 5Ghz as possible. I am just here to ask questions and get some feedback.

Check the video link and 5G is not everything, I7-8700k can do 5GHz as well, do you think they are similar speed? Nope.

Yeah I kind of already assumed that. For now I'm just interested in getting it set up to run at default clock of 4.7Ghz (Turbo Boost off) without any freezing like others have mentioned on here. After that's worked out then I'll consider a 240mm rad.

And yes, it's an easy return. That's why I went Newegg. And he's paying me more than 100 bucks and some beer of course.

I think I need to clarify that buying new parts is not an option at the moment. I have my current build and a 9590. That's it.

Do not bother. I'm currently typing this on a PC with an FX-9590. Quite recently I assembled a PC for a family with an FX-8320E (using spare parts that i had) that I was able to overclock to 4.5 Ghz. There was NO perceptible performance difference in gaming vs. the FX-9590 when using the same GTX 1060. If I were you I'd return the FX-9590 and sit tight until I could afford a new, current system.

Answer your questions:

1) Before I install the 9590, should I reset my BIOS settings prior to taking out the 8320? You can do so
2) What BIOS settings are a "must" for this processor? (besides the obvious power saving ones) none, power saving will likely limit cpu, I won't turn it on
3) Should I be re-installing any type of software including Windows 10? (hope not) No need
4) Would you recommend having an extra fan pointed at the VRM heatsink JUST to be on the safe(r) side? It runs very hot, yes, Noctua NH-D15 is very good, as long as your case allows
5) Will one 8 -pin CPU plug be sufficient for the 220w TDP? (AMD and Gigabyte's site say yes, just like to maybe hear it from someone who has had personal experience) 8 pin max is only 150W, but your rev 4.1 mb clearly says it supports 9590, either it has extra 4 pins (couldn't see from the mb pictures) or the mb will support the extra 70 from that 24 pin connector

In a perfect world, I would be building a new system. I am basically getting this 9590 for nothing out of my pocket anyway, so even if it's 5% better than what I'm running, it's 5% better. I also like the fact that I will have a fresh CPU compared to this 8320 which was purchased on the release date and I feel like it's not as fast as it was even a year ago with no changes to hardware or software (this pc is strictly for games and I use one of the two Macs we have in the house for anything else).

Did you have any issues setting it up? For example, BIOS, Windows, etc?

There's an economic fallacy in play here. You *didn't* get the 9590 for free as you don't have the hardware necessary to maximize the chances the CPU works for you and you also gave up an existing situation that was stable, something the 9590 is not guaranteed to be.

If you're not buying any additional hardware, I'd return the 9590 and get an 8350 and pocket the difference. Anybody who posts at Tom's regularly has experience with numerous 9590 threads in which the original poster *never* got it stable. We're trying to save you a lot of annoyance and a little bit of money.
