[AMD] FX Series or Phenom for gaming

Hey everyone i am picking out parts for my new build and have read mixed reviews for the FX 4100 for gaming. I have also seen many people talk about picking the Phenom II X4 for gaming. Which do you guys think is best?

I would be running it with:

(2x4)8GB Kingston HyperX 1600

GTX 550 Ti

And depending on which processor AM3+ or AM3 Socket motherboard.

AM3+ board should allow an upgrade path as AMD are sure to push the AM3+ standard moving forward. That said, right now there is no real difference and AM3 processors can run in an AM3+ rig. NOTE: AMD don't directly support this due to peak currents so this is at your own risk. In this case though I would go Phenom as the BE is also a great over clocker, in fact I think the bulldozer may bottleneck your 550Ti when compared to the BE overclocked.

Agreed. Get the Phenom. I went with the 960T @ the same price and have a x6 that runs at 3.4ghz easy (need a better cooler).

Phenom's are famously good gaming CPUs, Thats why i got one.

And won't consider upgrading till we see what the Pd release brings,

Phenom.. I have the 550TI, its factory Oc'd 100mhz over on the core clock.. here are my Cinnebench results.

You can run the Phenom II on a AM3+ motherboard with a 990FX chipset (and you should) the AM3 is a dead socket.

BTW, on my CPU I'm running 220 (reference clock) on 18x multiplier.

The FX 4100 is a module cpu. A module does 80% of the work of a dual core cpu. The FX 4100 is a dual module cpu, meaning its 80% of a quad core cpu when under full load.

The Phenom is a quad core cpu that does 100% of the load of a quad core cpu.

That should answer your question, FX 4xxx chips need 20% more clocks to do the same amount of work.

Get the AM3+ board, its compatible with both and can be used for the FX 83xx series cpus that have yet to be released (Q4 2012).

I run on an 890fx plate, 990 didn't give me the modding options I wanted, and I couldn't see anything it had that I needed over the 890 series, this helps op keep it cheaper too

Yea you're right. At the very least, I would steer clear of AM3.. Theres nothing left for it to do.

this is jist a personal openion but i am running a older system with a fx-60 amd processor and for it's time nothing could compare to it. if amd is willing to put the fx name to there product then it has been optimized for gaming. and the benchmark's show that to be the case, but i have never set up a system with one yet. i do build systems for high end gamers, jist havent had the chance to do so with these processors. i have with the black series and the outcome's were great with lots of o-clocking done to them in 5GHZ range but servere cooling is necessary to get these results. even without o-clocking the systems were fast, unfortunately today you need more than one video card to get the full graphic effect of new games. jist like years ago with the voodoo series cards. history really does repeat itself.
