so ive been waiting to get some extra cash to get my cpu for my build. is the only thing im really lacking, been looking at fx 8120, because cant i just get that and OC to 3.8ghz +? how easy is it to overclock the new FX series? im buying hyper 212 along with the CPU also. prolly wont WC this build.

The FX series is very easy to overclock and you should be able to get to 4ghz with just a small bump or two in voltage. However, you'd be better off building an intel build if your reason for building is mainly gaming. If your main purpose is video encoding/editing (other highly threaded applications) you should be fine with the FX.

Can't say on air cooling but with the XSPC 750 RS240 I am running my FX-8120 at 4ghz with just a 20x multiplier and no voltage overclocks. I run about 25c idle and between 32-35c full load and could get better cooling with a bigger rad(will be doing that when I wc my 6950's). The one thing I can not stress enough is to make sure you are using the latest bios update for your mainboard before you install the FX-8120. This will give you the smoothest upgrade to the FX.

+1 ^, I also have my FX 8120 at 4.2Ghz with no voltage increase. I would suggest adjusting your LLC (load line calibration) to very high or ultra to prevent Vdroop. I have heard very good things about the CM Hyper 212+, also you may want to look at the NZXT Havok 140. Hurry and make you decision before this thread gets annihilated by different users stating how terrible AMD and FX is compared to Intel

No, don't. The Evo performs the same as the 212+ and costs $20 more.

If you are into gaming, the i5 would be better money for performance and will OC just as well.

but the FX 8120 is an amazing cpu for cpu intensive tasks such as transcoding and rendering.

i wont be gaming on this rig at all, just messing around with alot of applications such auto cad 3d and photoediting, ive got a gigabyte 990fxa ud3 mobo. newegg has some heatsink for sale at $35 bucks i think by cooler master, havent looked at it cause im at work but it looked alright.. not looking to go with a high overclock, just a simple 4.0ghz prolly. ive never OC'd before so i dont wanna mess anything up..

i take that back its $44 after MIR, looks big though, idk if it would fit with my memory. anyone ever used one of these? is it compatiable with AM3+??

If you do overclock the 8120 I would not just raise the multiplier, I would reccomend lowering the multiplier and raising the base clock. I dont remember which website had the charts but a 8150 at 3.6 with a 250 BCLK scored 1 point higher in cinebench multithread test than a 8150 at 3.6 ghz with a BCLK of 200.

I have that board with an FX-4100. I undervolted the CPU and clocked it at 3.9 with the stock HSF and I never went over 45c until I started pushing heat into my case with a 560Ti.

You should be able to change your multiplier to 20x without worry with a 212+.

ill prolly just go with the hyper 212+ will do the same thing and dont think ill have to worry about it fitting. ill just stick some leds on the 212 myself LOL

I took my FX-8150 to 4.3Ghz stable with no voltage increase. I agree with the comments on the Hyper 212, good cooler for the money, I chose the Corsair A-70.(Very similar) Max core temp was 50C. This was with clock multiplier only.
I also used Corsair low profile ram (4X4). Lots of clearance on the A-70
