AMD FX9590 & NB/HT Frequency Question

Hey guys,

So I recently got my FX-9590 running smoothly at 5Ghz 24/7 but recently clocked down to 4.7Ghz because I wasn't comfortable running the chip at 62-64C while gaming.

I was just setting in my RAM timings on my G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 1600Mhz RAM (4x4Gb) to a stable 8-8-8-24 and it got me thinking about NB Frequency and HT Freq.

Right now in my BIOS I have both NB and HT Freq. set to 2600Mhz. I have had it set to this for a good while now, so no issues there with crashing etc.

I opened up CPU-Z just now and noticed my NB Freq is showing 2200Mhz (default) under the Memory tab. HT Link is showing 2600Mhz, however. When I had my FX8320, I think i remember it showing 2200Mhz in CPU-Z as well, even though in BIOS it has been set to 2600Mhz for quite some time, with no issues.

My RAM voltage is set to 1.65v as per the RAM sticks and manufacture's website.

My question is, is something not set right? Is this normal for Black Edition FX chips to do this by default despite manually setting NB Freq to something else?

NOTE: My CPU overclock is strictly with the Multiplier. No FSB overclocking. It is stock at 200Mhz.

Here are my specs:

AMD FX-9590 @ 4.7Ghz
Asus GTX 1050Ti 4GB ROG Strix edition OC'd slightly
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Rev. 4.0 (BIOS version F3 - latest)
Corsair RX750M PSU (750w)
16GB (4x 4gb) G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 2400Mhz RAM (Only can get it to 1600Mhz, that's a seperate issue.)
Corsair H90 AIO water cooler in push/pull config on top of case (140mm fans)
Samsung EVO 850 SSD (Windows 10 64bit)

Any help is appreciated! :)

Tinkering is fine and here is a tutorial on NB and HT overclocking, if you haven't already seen it.

I have built a number of FX-9590 combos in the past using CVFZ MB and had them clocked at 5.2GHz.
I also used the method above to get the best out of RAM. It is best to save a profile in Bios for your most stable profile once established (In case things go belly up) and to statically fix settings that are on Auto.

Don't hesitate to ask on any other topics re: the above. :)

Thanks for the response. I owe my low temps to my case and the placement of my radiator. I slightly modified the top of my case to allow me to mount the rad screws in places that don’t have precut holes. This made for the perfect airflow from the two 140mm fans I have on the front. I use a vape so I blew the vape in the case to test airflow.

As far as the NB, I understand the whole “not broken don’t fix it” but I’m a tinkerer who is diagnosed with ADD so I can’t just leave it be.

Still trying to get more input on this topic.

Thanks guys!
