AMD HD 6790 vs ATi 4870/4890

So what do you guys think, the three have most matching specs, but according to GPUreview.com 6790 may be just binned from 6870 and I guess it can be unlocked with a BIOS flash?

BTW this cant be compared to 5770 because 5770 has a 128bit mem interface instead of 256 bit

For those of you who dont know AMD 6790 released today.....

Lastly, do you think this will be worth an upgrade from 4770/5770/5750?

Just saw that it needs 2 pci x16 power plugs, something's wrong with AMD, a better card like 6850 uses less power than a lower end card OF THE SAME GENERATION?

Razor, the first cards seem to be using the 6870 PCB. This will raise the TDP. Its possible second gen cards will use a different PCB lowering the power used.

Overall I'm a bit disappointed in the 6790. Its more powerful then the 5770, but not greatly so. And its currently priced to close to the 6850 to suggest it. Its a good card if you only have $150ish firm, meaning you can't wait for rebates. I'd rather get the 5770 for ~$30-$50 less and get the 10-15% less performance, or spend the extra $30 and get the 6850.

Think of the 6790 as a better 5830, which just about covers it. Sure you could try unlocking it, but it doesn't have the backup BIOS like the 6950 does if you mess it up. Anyway it's an o.k budget card and is a good alternative to the vanishing GTX 460 768, but it's not good enough to make a meaningful upgrade from a radeon 5770 or 5750 if that's what you already have.

4890 is a tiny bit better. the 6850 wins them all easily.

There are some issues here however. The 4 series cards don't support DX11, and they use a lot more power. (lots more in the case of the 4890.) If you already have any of the first three, upgrading to the 6790 doesn't make a lot of sense. First, the currently cheapest model on newegg is $150 shipped. This is a bit of money for most, for not much more in performance. The second issue is you can get a 6850 which performs a lot better, for $175ish not counting rebate. You really should spend the tiny bit more money (comparatively) for the extra performance you get. If you have to buy a new card then the 6790 is worth considering. But even then it should be more like $135ish when the 6850 is $175.
