So I've just built my first pc based around an Asus gtx 1070 strix and I had a ton of fun doing it. I was inspired to do this after de constructing then rebuilding my alienware aurora r3. I want to build a project pc based around the 6950 card if it doesn't end up being a total waste. (ie, highly unupgradeable)

I've since used the HDD from that build as extra storage on my new system but the rest was pretty much unupgradeable trash.(ie mobo old and outdated) I saved the i7 960 processor(not sure which generation this is), the 875w psu, a dell dvd drive and a few fans of various sizes.

I would re consider using the processor but I'd rather use a fresh budget build focusing on the hd 6950. I would also probably use the 1tb Seagate that's in my current system just because I wont fill my main drive for a while and I can upgrade that later.

Anyways any advice on a budget build focusing around the hd6950,in the 400-600 dollar range?
I've tried looking but I'm not sure what MOBO's work with the 6950 and support future upgradeability.

The 6950 is equal to a 750ti at best. But I am not sure what AMD is doing about it driver wise. A simple search produced this article http://betanews.com/2015/11/24/amd-kills-gpu/ which suggests that driver support for the 6900 series has been discontinued since Nov' 2015.
And if your drivers are not updated, it will be difficult to play current games or any game since 2015 for that matter. Ofcourse you can play previous games but that will be a limitation for the full potential of your hardware.
Since you still have quite a bit of budget left in your kitty, i will suggest throwing in this current gen. GTX 1050ti to complete the build... https://pcpartpicker.com/product/NndFf7/zotac-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-4gb-mini-video-card-zt-p10510a-10l
Any motherboard with a PCIe X16 slot will work, but if you want to do this, I'd get an X58 LGA1366 motherboard and use the i7 960, it is still a capable CPU. The 6950 is more outdated than the i7. In fact, AMD isn't even updating drivers for that GPU anymore.

^^If you still wanna build around it, this is a current gen. kabylake build and the motherboard is compatible with the 6950.
